Hi

I've just inherited an old 306 xs phase 1 , so I thought I'd give it a new lease of life , by turning it into a Track day project. I know it's not a GTI-6, but after browsing all the forums, I thought this looked like the best one to join. So here's to months of scouring ebay for parts when I should be working, and lots of cold evenings in the garage scraping my knuckle's. What could possibly go wrong ?

Not looking forward to the home page when you're the most recent poster LOL

Bad enough with superchargedblackgti6 or whatever his name is that makes it all messy and out of line.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I work away from home during the week, so I'm reading all your project threads to give myself some ideas. First job is probably going to be sorting the wiring out. It looks a bit dodgy around the engine bay fuse box. I'm quite happy to risk my life at a track day, but not so happy to risk setting fire to myself at the same time !
There's a javelin evening track day at Donnington in August, so I might book myself a place on that to keep my mind focused on the job .

That' s a good idea, I tried it though and since there is no room in the garage I decided to work on it outside. I'm not sure if you've seen the weather over the past two months, but my car has had precisely 0% of the intended work completed since the weekend of nice weather we had in early February.

Good luck with the work, I'm sure you'll be on here, whilst covered in oil looking asking questions. I know I have Smile

That's true, when I left the house on monday, my girlfriends beetle was only just visible under the snow on our driveway !

But, over the weekend, while Carol is out shopping for more clothes and shoes that look exactly like the one's she's already got, I plan to be in full dismantle mode, and hopefully have some pics posted to prove it.

    Good luck with it Smile

So its a 1600? 8 or 16 valve? Should be loads of engine bits out there cheap to bolt on. Mainly from Saxos (If its a TU engine like I think it is). Should handle better than these heavy lumps too.

Just be careful buying parts from here, quite a lot won't fit and things like front springs will need to be different due to the weight. A lot will though and there are loads of ideas on here.

Also tyres and brakes (esp fluid) are your main focus, along with making sure it won't go bang on the first time out. Servicing is very important. Anything else you can do as an evolution as you go on.

Hi yes it's a 1600 8valve. done 60k. Thanks for the advise. The brakes can only be described as scary at the moment, so I plan to rebuild the brakes, bearings etc, and get a suspension kit for it.

It does feel quite slow, but once I get some speed up on track, I just won't slow down for anything!

Wouldn't bother rebuilding your brakes, they'll be s**t anyway. Get yourself some GTi6 calipers/discs and some cyclones if they don't fit behind your alloys there.

Not cyclones. Too heavy. Not sure your hubs will take the gti6 calipers.

Loads of bits for those engines kicking about. They can make decent power and don't weigh much.

Its a tu5 8valve boat anchor sitting bolt upright in front of the axle line...

Iron tu's are very heavy, alloy ones are 23kg lighter, all use a crap gearbox.

Stick a played with xu7 or just a gti6 lump in it, gets around gearbox issue too.

Hubs are the same so brakes fit.

    Hi
Ok, sound like a good idea, i'll add some gti-6 discs and callipers to my ever growing shopping list. oh, and some better wheels.
Think I'll sort out the brakes and suspension first, then worry about the horrific lack of power later. so when I'm slow on track, I can just blame the crappy engine !

The rear brakes are drums, would it be best to find a complete gti rear subframe with brakes and suspension to just swap across?

Hoping to start stripping it out tomorrow, so should have some pics to post. If anyone needs any trim bits let me know or they will be heading for the bin. From pics of gti's I've seen on here , the interior looks roughly the same.

    .

It's better than that, all the ancillaries are lighter too (shafts, cv's, uprights, bearings, radiator, cooling system...), ends up the best part of 40kg.

The brakes will be up to the job with an overhaul and some decent pads in the front, even the rear drums.

ah, it was the gti's I was thinking of. So the gti's were XU's 1.6 and 1.9 etc

Also looking at cages, probably going to be an OMP I think, . Just ordered some OMP seats.
