It's the simple fact that I have always worked on my cars at this address for the last 10 years, and also my brother who lives next door says he only hears the compressor when he's in his garage ( we have semi detached garages)

I would bet it's the bloke directly across from me whose lounge window looks directly down my drive.

The council mentioned that the complaint was about fumes, and no one else has ever mentioned anything to me before, apart from the tosser opposite

Andy, I'm really sorry mate Sad It's my fault!
It must be from when I came to yours the other week to pick the tyres up!
My exhaust must have been the last straw!!!!

I bet there's at least 300 people on this forum alone with a compressor in their garage!

The only way of getting your own back on the tossed who has complained is by going round smashing the windows of everybody on your street Smile

It'll be some muppet who's either old & retired or a younger person who doesnt go out to work who has nothing better to do with his/her time than to make somebody who works hard life that little bit harder for a while. Gives them a bit of drama & something to focus on. We'd be knackered if we had to stop potching with vehicles here at home, there's always some sort of tinkering that needs doing.

As Sarah said it's just how councils deal with these things - send a threatening letter and hope that's the end of it. They tell the guy they've written to you and hope he f**ks off and doesn't complain again.

Reality is the person who handles these complaints probably doesn't care about your planning or your tax, that's not their problem. It's just a shame the guy didn't come to you directly so you could find exactly what the actual issue was, then you could probably have dealt with it simply and amicably.

There has been one major oversight in all this - Did you mention that you live for the 306?

Once this is out in the open the whole matter will be swept under the carpet and totally forgotten about Thumbs up

Yes but the noise digging the patio up will exceed the compressor.

My neighbour is a full time chopper. Works on cars at his house on the end of the drive where EVERYONE can see and in the 5 years I have been there i've never seen him questioned.

He can cause a complete eyesore (think vectra up in the air on axle stands for a month at a time), front garden all mulched up from parking on it, and has been known to have 9 cars at a time - he can only get 4 on his property so duly consumes EVERY parking spot on the road - there's only about 5 within 50m of my house as we're the end of a cul-de-sac.

I've come close to reporting him a couple of times but don't want the attentions drawn to me working on mine. I have a complete twat next door at the moment who is waiting for an excuse as he thinks he owns the place despite renting.

Get a little unit and go the full hog, (doing your axles etc) you compete against businesses doing that sort of work so nows the time to go for it, if its worth it that is, once the council have got there heels in they will make it difficult for you and i am sure they have all the resources they need behind them.

I was in the same situation years ago that why i bit the bullit and went for it.

Obviously doing your own car is fine i would think but its going to be hard to prove otherwise if you carry on with axles etc.

some neighbours are just hard work, luckily i have never had the misfortune to meet one......yet.

Good luck mate.

Carl

So, it isn't the guy who lives opposite, but he's still a tosser!

It's actually the father of a couple who live the other side of my brother! Best is, he doesn't live anywhere near here!

What makes you think he has no right to complain?

Because he doesnt live no near him? And therefore Jord isnt causing him an issue

"It's actually the father of a couple who live the other side of my brother! Best is, he doesn't live anywhere near here!"

If they wanted it to have any standing surely they should have got the actual tenants/home owners to complain? Rather than someone who is effectively a guest?

Doesn't matter, if I think some guy 300 miles away is running a business without permission I can report him.

It's "bringing the matter to their attention" rather than saying it's causing you a specific issue.

Exactly. If someone next door but one finds the noise, tinkering etc too much, he may complain. Because he isn't directly next door doesn't mean the complaint won't be taken seriously.

I've just been outside ending the world with my throttle bodies. I will only run it for a minute or so at a time before turning it off and tinkering because I know if I was living behind, next door but one or opposite, it would get on my wick after a while.

I'm not suggesting Jord makes lots of noise, just responding to the fact people that live more than 10 feet away may find something more annoying than the person directly next to it.

    update

received a letter from the council, re-alleged noise nuisance caused by car repairs at ....................
basically, they are saying because there was a complaint, they have to investigate. common practice seemingly.

    i quote

'at this time i have no evidence that the complaint is justified or even that it is directed against the right source'

i call that a result Thumbs up
