I was just wandering if many on here has ever driven an S2000?

I've been hankering for one for a couple of years, but around 2 years ago I stupidly chose an Audi S3 instead. Anyway, the S3 went so and I've been driving my gti6 powered 205 gti for the last 6 months, which is proving quite tiresom on motorway journeys.

As I got married a week ago and now know how my finances stand, I thought I would start looking for a new motor as I don't really want to run the 205 through the winter. I've never driven an S2000 and ideally I would like to spend around 9-10k on a 2005 plate as they aren't in the higher tax bracket of 400 quid off per year.

Anyway, I took a look at a 2007 plate today with only 18k on the clock. Although I wasn't caning it in every gear because it was pretty wet, it really didn't seem that quick. Even the "wife" said that she thought my 205 was quicker, and she has no interest in cars at all. I thought it would be just as quick as the 205 but perhaps this one wasn't running right.

If I'm honest, the 205 is quick but it really makes a song and dance about being quick, so maybe the lack of cabin and induction noise on the S2000 just made it "sound" slower. I'm not into racing or anything like that, but has anyone had any experiences with these cars, either driving them or competing with them?

My other option is for a slighly pricier Golf Mk5 GTI Edition 30 which remaps quite easily to 300bhp. That would be M3 quick and easy to drive quick, but front wheel drive and possibly a bit boring. I fancy rear wheel drive and hairdresser top down fun.

Pretty sure someone on here bought a yellow one, can't remember who though, might have been Chet?

0-60mph quoted times range from 6.2-6.5 so they aren't mega fast on acceleration, I think it's more the enjoyment factor when you engage the VTEC, as is the case with many Honda engines; that 6500-9000rpm range would be highly addictive.

One of my pals has got one and he loves it hes got a yellow one to... Hes bolted a super charger to it as well and is running 370bhp so that could help haha

What gearbox you running in the 205? Mine is on a 1.6 box and although I have only been on the motorway a couple of times, I can see it would get annoying although the 205 isn't my idea of a daily.

    You have to beat them with an angry stick to make them quick. They don't hang about, but unless you're really pulling the tits off of them they feel a bit wheezy.

    The earlier ones had a more pronounced vtec kick, but after 2004, they are more refined. I suppose the 205 is pretty torquey, so it just may be a case of getting used to ragging the tits off it. Maybe it will be more appealing with the top down during the summer months, but in this weather..sod that.

    M3's are nice, but I just don't fancy the M badge running costs as I'm looking to buy a bigger house sometime soon.

    I think I would hate one, but saying that I really liked my S3. TBH the main reason the Clio is going is because if you want to go fast you have to hammer it so i imagine an S2000 is probably even worse, but if that doesn't bother you then go for it. I've heard the parts are very expensive for them though.

    TBH i dont think the trophy is worth the extra bunce. Had a go in my mates before i bought mine and didnt notice a great deal of difference over my cup packed 182.

    Just a normal 182 in a shit colour without decent headlights and climate. Does have some nice looking uncomfortable seats, nice wheels and some dampers that cost an arm and a leg to replace / refurb though.

    Been there and done that with the Trophy. Great cars but just fancy moving on from a FWD hot hatch for a change.

    I had some driver tuition from a Clio Cup racing driver on a track day when I had my Trophy. The one thing I recall is that he said "thank god you've got a trophy and not a cup or normal 182". Clearly they are no quicker in a straight line, but he said they handle so much better.

    I haven't driven a normal 182 or cup version, but I don't think I ever went round a corner that I thought I couldn't go around it again any faster. It just turns in, cocks a wheel, and keeps on gripping!

    One thing I felt in the S2000, is the anal twitching that went on everything I accelerated going round a bend. I'm sure I would get used to it with time, but not having any decent RWD experience, it can be pretty unnerving!

    Might be different on track but i didnt notice much difference down the backroads by me.

    Cant see why if you had £10k to spend on a grown ups car you'll be driving on the motorway you would consider another trophy TBH.

    I was just kidding with the Clio Trophy as i knew you had owned one before Wink


    The S2K is a fantastic car but need to be looked after to get the best from them.The rear suspension bushes are prone to seizeing and are a costly repair if not looked after.other than that they seemed pretty sold when i wanted one before i bought my house Sad

    Cheers Ash, I'm aware of the seized bushes problems on these cars, which can be a real pain given that they are so sensitive to geometry changes. Trouble is, unless you want to pay to get the geometry checked, there is no way of knowing if they are seized before buying the car.

    I did think of a 2004 Boxter S, but they aren't that quick either and they have that old man/midlife crisis/I can't afford a 911 air about them.

    A BMW Z3M would be pretty entertaining, but they look a bit odd and still cost 10k for something like a 1999 plate with 80k miles!

    I'm always tempted to spunk 10k on the mortgage and drive a shed for a bit, but seeing as no sprogs are on the horizon, I might as well get away with something impractical whilst I can.

    Ive driven my mates on and its a fantastic car, relatively quick and such responsive steering! I wouldnt have one but i thought it was a great car.
