I know the ep3,s are faster than accord type r,s and there have a 2.2 v-tec engine a s2000 would smoke a dirty old prelude

He computes for a living IIRC. I lolled when i saw you'd linked a boxter. I remember reading in one of Clarkson’s books about how he was driving the 2.7 boxter and got overtaken by a 1.3 nova SR.

Not worthy of a Porsche badge IMO.

Clarkson maybe a great entertainer, a biased tw*t(that's his selling point) and he simply can't drive to save his life. Thumbs up

Had a passenger drive in a S2000, I think it redlined at 9.5k. Great sound, and thrilling to drive, but you need to be in the top 3k to get the experience, not the sort of thing to test drive in the wet.

You can pick up an E36 M3 for £5-6k easily, keep £5k in the bank for servicing

Im currently on my second GTI-6, I also have a 350Z that I bought after narrowing it down to S2K and 350Z, but my brother went and bought one so I know them pretty well. Smile

Ive also driven 996, 997, E36/E46/E92 M3, GTR and some of the other cars mentioned in this thread so reckon ~I can add something to the proceedings Smile

The M3's are possibly the best cars in the world taking into account cost, practicality, reliability and reputation and this is deserved ....... but I dont find them partricularly exciting (although the E92 was a bit special, it has to be said) Smile
Personally I like the way 996's drive much better than 997's and they are an absolute steal these days Smile

An S2K is an amazing car ....... but only if you have a racetrack on the way to work, when you arent on maximum attack mode they become pretty annoying pretty quickly, and the fuel consumption is horrific. A 350Z beats it in every respect other than 100% full bo***cks driving, this would be my recommendation if you want an RWD coupe, but the Boxster is a bloody good car too Smile

For me, the thing that suprises me is how much more enjoyable the 6 and my Zed are compared to a lot faster, newer and much, much more expensive cars, they have this urge to be driven (faster usually!) which makes them reaqlly enjoyable.

The S2K has this in buckets but its a bit of a pain to live with and a real pain at the fuel pump Big grin

My friend had the john player special elise. They are embarrassing cars to get in and out of. He had the car for about 6-9mths and has a Merc SLK now. They were great fun though, even from the passenger seat and the interior was simply stunning in the black with the yellow suede. Not everyone's cup of tea but looked very smart!

I agree but you soon get used to it. It's not too bad with the roof off but with the soft top or hardtop on it's a challenge! It makes up for it once you're in and driving. If you think the steering is good on the 6 - these things are on an entirely different level - in fact the whole car is.

Yes owned a prelude redtop vtech quite a beast but hard to rip around the back roads, mate has owned a s2000 for about 7 years now but he never drives it fast since a previous car accident (Golf gti 16v).

350Z - not bad. I see about 28/30 MPG in mine a;lthough that goes right down with a bit of hard pedal action, servicing is between £250 and £500ish for a main dealer, they are generally reliable but some parts are scary 'spensive - a headlight unit is £1200 odd, air flow meter was £500 and clutches, brakes etc arent cheap either.

S2K - not good. Fuel economy is horrific (a mate went from an S2K to a Monaro and noticed a significant improvement!), insurance is a lot (IIRC my brother went from a 2K to an Evo8 and saved) but that said they dont go wrong very often, there was a rumour 5 or so years ago when I was looking at one that they hadnt had an engine failure at all Shock

You have to be pretty committed to get the best out of an S2000, whereas a 350 is a decent daily IMO, the lack of back seats is the only thing that stops it taking over the world Big grinUnsure

Interesting stuff thanks. It's great timing that this thread was started as both these cars are on my radar as a potential DC5 replacement. I'm used to Honda engines but the 350z seems a good contender. I'm not that keen on the shape of the rear tbh, but then I saw one in the flesh this morning and actually liked it. What are the servicing intervals like?

Ready? Big grin

At 1 Year or 9,000 miles P1 service
At 2 years or 18,000 miles P2 service (plus brake fluid change as extra item at additional cost)
At 3 years or 27,000 miles P1 service (plus coolant change as extra service item at additional cost)
At 4 years or 36,000 miles P3 service (plus brake fluid change as extra item at additional cost) - though P2 is exactly the same as a P3
At 5 years or 45,000 miles P1 service (plus plugs changed as extra service item at additional cost)
At 6 years or 54,000 miles P2 service (plus brake fluid change plus coolant change as extra service items at additional cost)
At 7 years or 63,000 miles P1 service
At 8 years or 72,000 miles P3 service (plus brake fluid change as extra service item at additional cost) see note above about P3 vs P2
At 9 years or 81,000 miles P1 service (plus coolant change at additional cost)
At 10 years or 90,000 miles P2 service (plus brake fluid change and airbag system inspection as extra items at additional cost)

Costs are £220 P1, £300 P2 and a P3 is the same as a P2. Note that sparkplug change is about £200 ....... you really wouldnt want to do it yourself though Wink

Mine looks nice from the back but its not entirely standard Wink

I know a few lads who have put them into AE86/KE70 Corollas with good results, anything heavier and the lack of torques might mean its not as quick as it should be. The gearbox and engine are two of my favourites of all time as well Thumbs up

Wouldnt work in a 6 unless you put it in the boot, if you front mounted an F20C and gearbox the shift lever would be in the boot somewhere anyway Big grin

The noises though ........ Ive got no sound here at work but can guess what this sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi8uIecN3ds

Thanks for the 350z info, much appreciated. Sounds like a fairly affordable car to own/maintain subject to not requiring any expensive replacement parts LOL Thumbs up

Got to disagree here I'm afraid. I don't find fuel economy that bad on the S2000. If you are VTECing everywhere you go, maybe your statement is true. Insurance is a killer, in old skool lingo its group 20. Enough said. Standard servicing at Honda will cost around £250-£300 whilst the big intervals [which include having the valve clearances looked at] are at 54k and 72k I think, will set you back around £460-£500. Of course you can massively bring costs down by supplying your own oil/plugs/etc.

Nothing has ever broken in the Honda, nothing has failed, everything just works as it should. Fingers crossed that continues. I've only had to buy consumables, oils, filters, tyres, you know the drill.
It's been a massive change from the Rallye days... where I'd be paranoid about a new noise every few weeks!

Jonnie Wigmore on here has fitted the F20C [engine from S2K] to a MK2 Escort for his rallying kicks:

Drive both of them back to back Jon, give them a bit of abuse [not in this weather!], I'd be interested to see what you think Thumbs up.
