Thought I would put a thread up on my Evo seeing as so many users of this forum love Jap cars!!!Whistle

This was my first Evo,a V which was in great condition,from the outsideRoll eyes.



I used it for 6 months over summer then decided to do a winter tidy up on the underside as Evos are not undersealed/seam sealed for winter use as standard as they are JDM.
Once I started stripping it down I soon realised how hard a life the UK winters had gave itRoll eyes
The first warning sign was a fresh patch of underseal on the rear chassis between the diff mount and rear cross member mount,scraped off the underseal and found a plate stuck over a rotten hole in the chassis with siliconeAngry
(The car had 11 months MOT when I bought it)
Levered the plate off and lots of rusty metal dropped out of the chassis.
So after removing the rear suspension/diff/x-member etc this how it lookedNinja



No wonder it smelt of petrol when I filled up!!!!!The rotten pipe in pic is the fuel filler pipe.Shock









So I thought bugger it,break it up.

So then had to decide if I was going to break it up and re-shell or sell the lot.
Decided to re-shell after seeing this VI shell for sale,went to view it and found it was in VERY good conditionWink





Had allready decided to strip everything off the underside and properly protect the shell after seeing the state of the V.

Started off with some petrol on a cloth to remove the wax oil

I know of a fair few Evo's that have been found to be rotten as old Pears.

They look lovely on the outside, but can be fooked underneath.

Be good to see the progress you made on the VI shell Kev

Yeah,all that went for scrap was the bare shell with front and rear screens,everything else removed.
I snapped off circa 20 bolts on the front end removing parts,the Mitsi bolts are proper monkey metal.
Also looking down the inside of sills they were rusty the full length,when you pushed the sill from underneath you could hear the rust crumbling etc.
So even if I had rear chassis repaired the shell would have continued to rot away in different areas,so all in all I thought bugger it off!

So after removing the sticky wax oyl I hit it with paint stripper/rust removal discs/wire wheels etcSmile
After abit of work I discovered the Mitsi paint was hiding some surface rust which was not visible until the paint was removed,so then made the BIG decision to take it back to bare metal on the whole underside!
The pic below was how the majority of the underside looked,pretty well covered with waxoyl,but once removed its just covering surface rust.

So once it was all back to bare metal and rust free I painted it all with Rust Bullet paint.

Once the rust bullet was cured I sealed all the seams with Tiger Seal and applied the white top coatSmile

Then started on the under bonnet area,rubbed down any surface rust and etch primed,sealed all the seams up.







And thats how its sitting at the minuteWink

wow i cant belive how much rust was on that evo,inever seen that much before. this is going to be an awsome evo when finished,is there any engine mods on this one then?

Shock Genuinely staggered at how rusty that V was for a circa 15 year old (?) car! Even most Mini's aren't as rusty. Japan is hardly the Sahara, surely they have a maritime climate broadly similar to ours, with rain, snow and all the terror that comes with? Unsure

I didn't think they gritted the roads the same as we do hence less corrosion?

Could be wrong mind.

I'd expect them to rust like a bugger if you lived near the coast there though!

Yeah but even so, the gritters aren't out that many times over the winter (in the south at least).

Just rainfall alone will end up causing bad rust over the course of a decade or two I would have thought (on a badly sealed car). I'm sure they receive a decent amount of rain in parts of Japan. Odd.

Apparently there are fresh imports coming over from coastal areas of Japan that are rotten underneath nowSad

Pretty sure non of the JDM cars get undersealed the same as cars for European markets etcUnsure

had the same issue with mine, ended up joining them in cleaning all the rust from underneath my rallye

Another ex gti6 member on here... Dave sold his six and bought an Evo from a garage. Turned out to be a total dog, subframe was total rotten and shouldnt of passed an mot Sad he did get it sorted eventually
