Morning people, I've been toying with the idea of performing a 4x4 conversion on my rallye as with 500bhp I think it will perform better with four wheel drive and be faster round track.
has anyone got any ideas or advice knowledge they could share add to this thread?
couple of ideas I've had involve evo gearbox and running gear or cosworth running gear any other transmissions that could be used? cheers and happy Christmas to you all

The most common way is to use the parts from the 405 Mi16 4x4.

Ecosse do a 'drive in/drive out' service for around £8000 last time I looked. Yes

Would of thought that the torque would destroy that transmission thought Stan? that's why I'm thinking evo or cosworth but I'll speak to ecosystem and see what they have to say thanks for the advice.

Well, it probably needs strengthening but I meant that the system itself would be a better fit to a 306. If you use Jap components then I would imagine a lot of parts will need fabricating etc which would make the price rocket.

Cut the floor pan out of the EVO and make the 306 shell fit. You may as we'll use the EVO engine, come to think of it, buy an EVO. Job done.

I've had jap cars Jim doesn't have the flair of the 306 plus I like the engine noise of the 6 much more. Plus that's not very helpful Jim really but I understand you're comments Flip
only kidding mate just trying to maximise the potential my engine will have.

As most here, I drive a 306, and I cant say 'flair' is top of my list of descriptive words!

For the big effort it would take to graft a 4x4 sytem on, you might aswell by a proper 4 wheel drive car with 500hp for less money and go faster. Other wise just make your front wheel drive setup work to the best of its ability..

It's been done, it's easier to try and graft on as many of the 4WD drive bits from the donor vehicle as you can. Good thing with EVO/Scoobies is there are loads about. If you opt for the Mi16 option you'll find they are rare as big tits on Fern Cotton.
The hardest part will be mating the pug lump to the Mitsi tranny, then fitting it sideways in the bay with the SC setup on will be another serious hurdle. Also does the drive side of the Pug lump come out on the same side as a Mitsi engine? Lots of things to overcome but if you know what you're doing and aren't afraid of a 9" angle grinder the world is your lobster.

The gearbox from early evos is on the wrong side but later are on the right side. Devere i owned a very fast subaru before and to be fair it's boring because everyone can have one and to be fair why do people comment who aren't being useful to the thread!

I wasn't saying don't do it...

Your original post asked for ideas advice or knowledge about it. I offered my advice about what I think you would be better off doing. As I said, I never said don't do it.

Sorry mate just get wound up all i am asking for is advice on how to do it? I know its a lot of work and it would be easier to buy something four wheel drive but that's not what I want to do! I feel that for the work to have 500bhp four wheel drive 306 it would put a smile on my face every time I drove it. the subaru didn't.

Sadev, stick the engine in the middle, couple of diffs, spaceframe.

At least that way when you're finished you won't go 'hmm, could have just bought an Evo'

Phillip I wish I had the money to build it into a rallycross car but 200k budget doesn't really come into it and at least I'm thinking outside the box I'm thinking 12-15k for a 4x4 conversion would you say that was a good guesstimate?

405 gear is pretty crap to be honest and isn't very strong.

To be honest id say if you started to do this it'll be a project that gets money chucked at it, not get finished as you'll loose interest. Seen it so many times I'm afraid.

If you want to go on track and it's traction your worried about. I bet this car be sorted with a plate diff, canber, wide front rims and tyres and proper suspension. Not talking just bolt on coil overs and arb's

Look Kevin birds seat Leon that races on the castle Combe saloon cars as he's running that sort of power in a front wheel drive race car.

I have bought a plate diff, and have asked about wider front rims and have been in contact with black art designs for custom Coilovers but still think traction will be an issue! cheers for the comment Ash

I'd stick with front wheel drive, maybe even de-tune it a bit if it doesn't work?! I still think it'll be capable of being quicker than a scrapyard 4x4 conversion.

If you go over to 205drivers there's a guy with an 405 4x4, its an mi16 mounted up to an evo gearbox/transfer box and then the mi 4x4 rear diff iirc. Gearbox is mounted using an adaptor plate, obviously a fair bit of fabrication involved but it looks a decent set-up. I believe sacthells had some input on the car but how much of the 4x4 conversion he did I'm unsure.

I personally don't think you'll get a 4x4 to handle properly unless your not on a budget and you can have a serious setup fabricated.

I'm going to be buying 8' wide revolution rims for the front of my 205. These are basically rear wheel drive escort rims so I can be putting a decent tyre width down on the front end.

You want to be looking at a proper subframe which will stop flex with revised bump steer, proper wishbones, revised ballpoint height, lowered steering rack, some decent camber and castor then choose coilovers afterwards.

I don't think that's quite the transmission conversion I'm looking for mate it maybe suitable for a standard engine but I think a supercharged one would spit it straight out! I was hoping someone would have known someone who has done a conversion. but thanks for all the comments guys keep them coming!

Looking on ebay at transfer boxes to get the power to the rear. If you've got a strengthed box then you could probably fabricate a mounting bracket and use a transfer box/diff like in this picture.

Its small and aslong as you can get the right size splines etc then all you have to do is make a bracket/ shortern the o/s shaft. I don't know about clearences though. As for the rear I think making a wishbone setup would probably be the easiest as most rear subframes unbolt and you could use that as a base. Something like a freelander. I've heard you can buy the 4wd peugeot sport rear beam which they used in the rally car with a price around 10 grand.

Other thing is how much room will be left for the exhaust after you you fit the propshaft.

I swear when i went into pug performance a few years ago, colin said they were working on a 4x4 twin turbo.

That was when they were building mark ballmans white 6 that carl ended up buying.

I could be wrong but im pretty sure that what he said.
