Looks like I need a second car now as the missus has changed her working shifts. I've been looking at diesels but for £3k there's not much out there and they have high mileage and its all rather boring really. I won't be doing that many miles so petrol seems the way ahead. As I'm a family man with a house and all associated bills, running costs are a factor as I don't want to spend a fortune on insurance etc.

I've come up with three choices so far:

A tidy Clio 182. These are quite economical and I should imagine are fairly cheap on the parts and Ash says £3k will get a good one. Insurance is £365pa and £260 in tax.

Should get a half decent one for my budget but with about 100k on the clock, maybe less. Owners seem to have very few issues with these as the engines are rock solid as long as history is there. Guess parts are fairly pricey on these but insurance is £365 and £280pa tax.

Finally my favourite, a 325ci m sport. I've had a 323 before and it was good and solid and drove great. The straight six engines are pretty bulletproof but if anything goes wrong BMW will have my pants down on parts prices. The space will be handy for family use but not essential. I've used a 205 for family use before and it was ok. Insurance is £348 and £280pa tax.

Any other suggestions out there for £3k that I've missed or any advice/opinions on what I've chosen so far? I'm not much of a fan of Seat Leon's before anyone suggests it.

I like how in the last photo his number plate is blurred out but he's left his other car / his neighbour's car in the background.

You can't consider a Clio without considering a Corsa, they do the SRI if you want a bit of grunt. Not really my kinda car, but then neither's a Clio LOL

If you're looking at Clios and E46s that's quite a wide net you're casting there, could take you a while...

Standard responses: Golf? Fiesta? Focus? Talbot Horizon? Mazda 3?

I like cupras, quick and. Handle well Dunno

You considered a Mazda 3 MPS? (If they've dropped below 3k yet) I drove one, and was very impressed.

The Clio is natural progression for your average rag and bone GTi6 owner.

I rate them for what they are, especially if it was 306 Vs Clio argument but I'd probably point you away from them.

The BMW at that money is good value IMO. What about the 530 sports of a similar age? I was following them a while back but wouldn't have a clue today whether 3k would get you one.

If you find a facelift ep3 CTR for £3k with excellent history, try that.

Pre 54 ones tend to have poorer steering, dodgy 2nd gear and interiors aren't as nice

Not as bad on fuel as people reckon.

Since changing from shell/esso super unleaded to bp supreme, I find better performance and economy

There does seem to be a fair few 2004 facelift ones out there. Most have over 100k on them though but that doesn't really worry me so much with a Honda engine.

As much as I like the Clio and I'm sure it's a great fun car to drive, I'm going to cross it out.

Nice looking cars they are but I doubt they will be that cheap for many years yet.

I looked at Audi, there are some nice 1.8T's out there but I would always go for the BMW over it, I just prefer them.

So now I'm deciding between just the BMW and the Honda and I'm swaying towards the Honda a bit. I think both have bullet proof engines but the Honda is more likely to have been hammered but the BMW will have my pants down if something breaks. I'm so bad at making decisions sometimes...or am I?

I did think about the snow but for those 2 weeks I can just use our other car. I think I'll just keep an eye out for one that's nearest, whatever car it might be or ill just keep bumping this thread with my lack of deciding ability.
