Got to the garage to put petrol in earlier and noticed a pool of gearbox smelling oil by the tyre. The bolt from the gearbox for the fill level had come off and the gearbox was p**sing oil!

Looking back over the trail it only looks like it happened just as I was getting to the garage, about 500m up the road (can't see any oil before then). Luckily I have a spare gearbox to sacrifice a replacement plug from. Going to have to get the old dear to nip to pug in the morning and drop me some 75w/80, as I don't have any I can top it up with here.

I need to get some degreaser to get the s**t off, I hope the pads won't be shot. Still seems to stop ok in the couple of miles I had to get home. Good job I was putting fuel in, otherwise it's possible I might not have noticed, as I wouldn't go round that side of the car in the morning, then straight onto the motorway.

I can... Hasn't fat rat been near this car?

Guess there is small bonus in having the ability to use long hoses at a petrol station.

I always go the other side of the pump, I prefer it, gives a better view of the readout, saves neck strains!

These things happen. Even well regarded Peugeot specialists make sillu mistakes, so don't be disheartened by making an error like this as a home mechanic Smile

Having said that though, I don't use this method to fill the oil level. No

I simply get the oil hot, jack the car up one side and drain it out, leaving it overnight. Then I fit a new drain plug and washer and then put 2 litres in the top breather hole. Yes

The official level is 2.1 litres, but you're not going to get the last 100ml out when draining so that's just fine.

That way, there's less mess and you don't have a need to remove the filler plug.

Removing the level plug to ensure the level is spot on is worth the minute it takes. Poor maintenance if you ask me.

    Thanks everyone.

All topped up this morning. The rate it was coming out it couldn't have happened much before I noticed it, plus the trail only goes round the corner from the garage. So I'd say 3 miles max. It did drink 1.4l of new oil mind you, but hopefully no issues will arise from it being a little low for a few miles.

All I can do is hope it's fine and crack on. It's got just the right amount in in now anyway, plus I've made doubly sure the nut is nipped up nicely.

I think I will be doing the same from now on. It could have been a whole lot worse if I'd managed to get it on the motorway without noticing.

I guess high speed and not much oil would be a very bad combination for the gearbox.
