Yes! Yet again new car time.
I now have a company car and want a summer car so this time comfort and stuff isn't important.

I want to maximum fun and driver satisfaction . that is all

205 1.6 gti 1990, standard
Or
S1 Rallye 16v, s1 gearbox and a few subtle mods.

Need help deciding.

Both in great shape, cambelt done etc, no rust, good runners, long tax and mot.
I've looked over both closely and they are great fun to drive.
The Rallye is obviously quicker and gearing is awesome but I've had a fair few now. The S1 box makes it really lively but the 205 has a really nice balance with the power and gearing and the way it rides.

Both have full standard interior, both noisy and raw.
What would you chose?

It's a tough decision, a lot of people who try a 205 after thinking they want one are often a little disappointed.

I've never had a 205 Gti. Are they as fun as a rallye??

Go test drive one and find out.

You'll probably think that because everyone in the 80's said they were fast and nothing could catch them, you'll disregard the power figures and think it is a rocket ship. It isn't, it'll have modest performance and depending on condition it'll be fun and feel nimble or s**t and drive s**t with lots of knocks and bangs.

In terms of fun, you'll probably enjoy it.

I drove a really crappy example and it was great fun because the back was so loose and it was a lot of laughs

Have you ever owned a 205? If not, go for it! Good ones are sensational to drive!

I had a mate test drive it as it's far away, he's owned a couple before and says it idles sweet, revved freely and drives tight. But I've never driven one myself!

That's the dilemma. I know the rallye is a lot quicker and handling is great.

Question is.. Is the 205 full of character and magic?

Why not just buy a 205 with a 6 engine best of both worlds in my eyes

This, 106 is too small imo.

The 205 is nothing but fun, nimble and fun, iv owned quite a few.

I'd say get a 205 but personally I would go for minimum 1900 8v, the 1600 although fun to give a hammering are just slow imo. A 16v converted one is great fun and overall I'd say a 205 is very similar in many ways to a 106 Rallye.

If you've never owned one go for it, it's not like you haven't had a S1 106 before and I doubt whichever you have will be kept more than a month so at least it'll be another car to say you've owned LOL

Go for a 205, because if you end up selling it within a month it won't have lost any money!

    Cheers for the opinions guy.
    I will borrow my mates standard 1.6 205 for the weekend and see if it wins me over.
    I'm not expecting it to be as quick or raw as a 16v rallye but I like old hatches that flow nicely through country lanes and give a sense of driver satisfaction when pushing hard.

    Will update with my findings!

    i'd have thought you'd be either wanting a 1.9 205 rather than a 1.6. best place for the 1.6 engine is in the bin

    Really? How come you don't rate the 1.6? I've heard that it's the more revvy one that needs to be worked to get it to shift and personally, that appeals to me. It's one of the reasons I love the 1.3 8v 106.
