After 5 hours of trawling the internet and this site I figured I would ask.
My 1997 gti-6 won't start. It will not turn over. The fuel pump primes and all of the lights on the dash are bright and it just clicks when the key is turned. It is one solid click from under the bonnet.
All fuses are ok and the central locking works.
I changed the coolant today and thought that I may have got the crank sensor wet but from what I have read it would turn over if the crank sensor was at fault, mine doesn't.
I have put the car in gear and tried rocking it but again to no avail.
I tried bumping it twice but it wouldn't go. (I was on my own and these things are heavy)
I tried using jump leads to a huge battery on a Saab 95 2.3 and again it did the same thing although when I was trying the gti it really slowed the saab's engine down.
Couple of strange things were the clock and thermometer display just alternated rhythmically between horizontal and vertical lines (see pictures).
And after I tried to start it every time all of the dials would wind around (see picture)
I put a multimeter on the battery and it was 12v, turned the ignition on and it dropped to 11.86v and when I tried cranking it it dropped to 3.5v.
Answers on a postcard please.
I am thinking battery or starter but really appreciate any of your opinions. Thanks.
