Coming home from work this evening, I entered a roundabout into the outside lane (2 lane entry and 2 lanes on the roundabout). Roundabout has lane markings. Giving way to my right as I entered the outside lane I saw a silver Vauxhall on the inside lane (i.e. not the same lane as me) but he was at least 20 metres away. About 15m after joining the roundabout I hear a blare on a horn to my right and the Vauxhall driver, a fat bloke in his 50s comes to a halt with his grille inches from the driver's door. I kept going and saw in the mirror he was halted in the roundabout, at an angle across his lane.

I've noticed before that people like exiting the roundabout in a racing line directly from the inside lane, moving at an angle across the outside lane as if it wasn't there. He was wanting to take the exit after the one I entered.

I was well far enough in front of him for him to see me join the roundabout, so it wasn't like I entered the roundabout in a way that forced him to brake. Basically I think he was driving fast, and thought he should have the use of both lanes in the roundabout. He was trying to make out that I had not given way on entering, and to give the impression he "didn't see me" and "had to take evasive action", i.e. he was manufacturing a near miss. All of which was bol***ks, as he was not at all close to me and in a different lane.

WTF is it about people who drive like that? Surely you have to move into the outside lane before exiting a roundabout and if there is a car in a different lane you have to give way to it when changing lanes? He could have moved in behind me and off the roundabout no problems at all. Fat loser in a boring car.

Just had to have a rant about this.

Insurance will want to know who was on the round about first, who ever was on last will be seen as the one at fault.

Thanks, beez_neez, that is something to keep in mind.

So do lane markings not apply on roundabouts? You just give way to all vehicles whether they are in the lane you intend to enter or not? He was not indicating left to show he wanted to change lane or exit so it was my belief he was intending to stay in the inside lane.

Indicators are just that to indicate, it does not mean by law that the person will be turning or moving lane via insurance rules etc.

Since all roundabouts are different, at the end of the day if you see a car on any lane of the roundabout then by law you have to giveway. What you did is similar to the peoples road sense, courtesy etc, street driving etc.

@ the end of the day he was being a nob and you were not fully doing what the insurance would want you to do if a claim had to be made.

You should try driving in Canterbury,it still shocks me now,and im used to itUnsure
Its full of doddering old f**kers and foreigners. They sit at roundabouts, every entry giving way to each other,i usually give up giving way to the right and just go,or we would all be sat there all day!No
Another favourite that happens most times is a small roundabout, its a single lane road, splits to 2 lanes just before the roundabout and 3 entrs/exits. So,if you are in the left lane, you SHOULD be turning Left Or Straight over, and if in the Right lane, turning right. The amount of f**kwits i encounter trying to turn into me when im going straight over and they were in the right hand lane wanting the straight over exitThumbs down

I was behind a guy today who was in the left lane, indicating right and went straight. The exit has two lanes and he then proceeded to cut me up as he exited onto the right lane (both lanes go off at this exit) I proceed to give him the appropriate hand motion, along with a fine exclamation of what I though of his driving at the time.

An even better one but not totally related, I was on the motorway the other day and after pulling on at a junction I was behind a lorry doing around 60MPH, as I pulled out there was a woman doing 35MPH in the centre lane totally oblivious. I had to slam on so hard there was smoke coming from the tyres and she had no idea I was there, there were cars overtaking on either side of her and she didn't give a f**k. I hate other people

This is such a basic concept that many drivers fail to get to grips with. One thing that really boils my blood is when people don't indicate when going around a roundabout, only when they pull off it.

The highway code states you do have to indicate, but regardless its just common courtesy...

I don't know how roundabouts work or who to give way to so I work on the basis that I must get across quicker than the opposition.

I had a similar incident yesterday with a class A loon in a 7th gen Accord in heavy traffic that had a serious anger management issue and wanted a reaction from me(Fist through the sunroof, w*nk signs, I'm going to slit your throat, kill etc) whilst travelling at 40mph on a dual carriageway. This nutjob was weaving in and out of the lanes, slowing down almost to 15mph and my girlfriend and her two friends strapped in me car was simply terrified.

After spending a weekend and travelling almost 500 miles roundtrip from Devon to NW London, this was the last thing I needed.

My only feeling why this imbecile got heated up may have been the fact that I booted to 40 from standing start, safely from a busy roundabout(the moment the lights went green) whilst maintaining my lane discipline and indicating correctly upon entering and exiting the roundabout or the fact that I had 3 ladies in my car and he looked like a proper class A mug(several gold teeth driving a pimped out Honda with aftermarket wheels for not being able to keep up)?

For starters he was on the wrong lane to go straight anyway(lane with arrows marking left only at the lights). Also there was a 24 wheeler blocking two thirds of the roundabout, so when the lights changed, he got held up by the truck's backside and I had a clear path ahead going straight(2nd exit).

In the end, I dropped a few cogs, did a quick maneuver at the next roundabout and chose an alternative route to get to my destination and lost sight of the idiot.

I was concerned about my girlfriend, her friends and also myself to ensure none of us get a bullet up our asses thanks to someone who doesn't give a sh*t on the public roads.

Simply put, treat every single driver on the road as a complete cretin, that way you are never surprised.

Laugh at the BMW/Audi/Insignia/Range Rover/4x4 bullies, slow down in front of white van uber bullies and laugh without looking at them!

You will still get annoyed, but try and read their movements, you would be amazed how often you are spot on, most people who take no interest in driving drive the same dumb way, so you can read them like a book.

You will still get wild-carded now and then, but driving like this leaves me less stressed these days!

Chunder27, thats the nail on the head.

I havnt read all the comments as its too late and im tired but for those of you that dont drive a lorry for a living, its much worse. Ive come close to quiting my job several times because of the standard of driving and pure hatred towards truckers. I drive a 32 tonne truck and i get bullied all day, every day. Its a different league in a truck. After what happened today, i dont know what the future holds for me anymore.
My dad paid £1200 for me to pass my hgv test 7 years ago and im on the verge of giving up, purely because of other road users No

Danny, there's no point in letting others bully you off the road or out of a job.

If you can't beat them join them. Thumbs up

I come across idiots all day whilst at work in the van, but then I get my own back when I go out on the bike and ride through all these plonkas, probably scaring the life out of them, which is quite frankly what they deserve.

I sympathise mate, it must be a real nightmare for you when you pull out into lane 2 on a motorway regardless of what traffic is already there, cutting people up and forcing them to brake suddenly ir swerve into lane 3 causing other drivers to panic brake. This effectively causes a dangerous situation when less experienced drivers panic and then of course there's the 5 minutes of overtaking which causes massive frustration as you've basically blocked a lane off and cause congestion behind you. You must really feel bullied in that situation Whistle

The main issue with lorries is they are often speed limited.

It can be frustrating when they overtake each other at half a mile an hour difference, but you have to accept they are at work!

They would go faster if they could but you can only go so fast with that much weight and ability to react to other cretins.

Some truck drivers are a bit silly, like some car drivers, but they are usually working while you are travelling somewhere on your time off or going to work. That is THEIR place of work!!

Van drivers are far worse, much more aggressive, especially builders! I travel on the A1 and it's rammed with them every morning, full of blokes asleep!!

I generally think the motorway standard in the UK is not too bad, you can usually pick out the morons miles away, you just have to accept that just about everyone drives in the middle lane, even on 4 lane roads and that they dont know what the speed limit is on normal roads!! Our issues with congestion and poor driving are largely our own fault, because the vast majority of people have no idea how to drive on a motorway and use lanes.

Or they just cant be bothered!

    Driving issues are simple really.

There are two groups of people on the road IMO. Those who *enjoy* driving and take an active interest in it and those who drive because needs must with no interest in it whatsoever.

The latter group simply worry about themselves and getting what they need to get done sorted. Driving is just a part of their day which enables then to complete whatever it is they do successfully.
It's up to the former group to pick their way safely through the latter group and try not to have a coming together. Yes

You are making yourself look like all the other braindead drivers with this narrow minded vision that truckers are nothing but mere obsticles in your way. If i was to list all the things that car and van drivers do that wind me up then i would fill maybe 20 pages of this thread. Dont act like you are scared of trucks because you are not, and neither is the majority of road users and this is the problem. Eg, im in a queue of cars travelling at 30mph, i leave a 'safe' gap in front of me but every car driver will pull into it. Not in front of a car but in front of a lorry. They make you brake and if you sound the horn or flash your lights, all we get is the middle finger. I know none of what i say will make you realise the problems because people these days are to selfish and arrogant to give way to others, especially truckers!

And as for trucks overtaking, this may take 1-2 mins and its easy to say that that is what is causing a tailback but, how long does it take to overtake a lorry if you are travelling at 70mph? 5 seconds...? It is the car drivers that dont pull over into the left lane whilst not overtaking that cause the traffic. Its simple knowlege that idiots cant understand.
