Bit OTT for me, certainly public or televised executions. Capital punishment could have it's place perhaps, for the very gravest of offences. Terrorists, peadophiles and some murderers would be eligible as far as I'm concerned. But you'd need an absolutely airtight case to employ the ultimate penalty.

I do think that public punishments like flogging would be a good deterant, especially for antisocial behaviour, there are a few kids round my way that would benefit from a bit of 'correction' in the form of a good hiding. Just my opinion of course.
Thing is, you can't do it now, it's aginst their human rights. Sod the victims rights not to have their windows smashed or have dog-s**t left on their doorstep or any one of a million small travesties that afflict decent folk daily.

Violent crimes like what, murders? A lot of murders are committed spur of the moment, by accident, when drunk etc. Imagine you were out on a Friday night, you got pretty p**sed and got into a fight with some guy you just pinched you girlfriends ass. You turn around and punch him and later on he dies from head injuries. Would you rather have at least 15 years in prison where you will only come out after if you have proved you a reformed person, or would you rather be publicly hanged in front of a booing crowd?

Either way, neither punishment stopped you from hitting that guy cus he pinched your girlfriends ass.

I'm with Jim here, a little OTT, but yes capital punishment does have it's place I'm sure. Yes

At the end of the day the crimes need to stop. That's the first port of call in my book, once you've achieved that, the rest will just fall into place.

Capital punishment are you mad? The country doesn't need that and there are so many reasons not to have it!

Also just to highlight Stan, it has been proven that it don't work as a deterrent.

I disagree, at certain times the government will take steps to eliminate threats to national security through military means, the military and police have been called upon on numerous occasions to end terrorist or hostage situations with lethal force, this one one end of the scale a vbery immediate form of capital punishment. If I took a hostage and pointed a gun at their head in central London, I would expect (rightly) a bullet in the head from an armed response unit in short order. Not many people have a problem with this.
I don't see how this is much different to executing a psyhcopath, a terrorist or anyone else who has proved beyond reasonable doubt that they pose an immediate or ongoing threat to society.

I would argue that in some form or other every form of 'civilised' government employs capital punshment.

So here is an honest thought that went through my head during a meeting this week. let me know what you think.

Just so you know, I dont work with spastics anymore, I now work with kids in care. The ones i've dealt with have gotten sexually abused, gang raped, had a tough upbringing blah blah... all nasty s**t. BUT, all these kids in care are little c**ts and go out and commit crimes, get involved in drink and drugs from an early age, have no respect for the law or anyone they come across. So a lot of them they will grow up in a life of crime, no doubt in and out of prison, like their parents. Some might say 'can you blame them due to what they've been though?' others might say, 'just cus you've been gang raped, no need to be a c**t about it' .

So my thought was, we need a cutting off point. Why not put all these kids on a separate island like in Lord of the flies and let them die off. They wont grow up here and commit crimes and they wont breed, cus no doubt their kids will be exactly the same.

So that thought literally popped into my head at one point during a meeting. So, what would you say? Stick em on a separate little Island like Lord of the Flies, or try are damnedest to help these kids build a positive future for themselves? Baring in mind there are roughly 700 kids in care in Bristol alone..

Fair point, I was going to suggest such remedies as these. However, I thought that if I did I would be further accused of being some kind of mental zombie which loved the idea of violence. (Which I don't by the way, before somebody suggests that.)

At last, it seems we agree on a couple of points. I would love to see proper criminals doing hard labour, paying back into society and at the same time (hopefully) being rebuilt into proper respecting citizens.

However, as soon as somebody suggests ideas such as these, you start hearing phrases like "but that's against their human rights". It used to be the way it was done, but now we can't any longer condone this kind of action. And where does all this come from? The *European* Court of Human Rights. LOL

And this is one (of the many reasons) I argued a few pages back why we should get ourselves out of that over-bearing, nanny state of a constitution. However, it seemed that wasn't the way forwards. Shame really, because if we did leave Europe tomorrow I reckon we could implement the fantastic ideas that Jim has come up with overnight and make this country much better (that is possible Owain) than it already is.

As said the human rights idea originally came from Churchill a right wing member so... Euro have taken over the idea. I believe in human right myself but more for the victim rather than the crim.

The thing is, I reckon you could help a whole lot of them by helping them as much as you can, but basically telling them to man the f**k up. Part of the problem at the moment is that as soon as something bad happens to someone they're made to feel like they're the only person with problems, and this extends to the whole country.

By all means offer support, but it needs to be more of a "okay, let's get on with your life" than the current "let's sit around and cry about it". Less "that's so bad that thing that happened to you" and more "well there are people far worse off in the world, get over yourself".

It doesnt really work like that. These kids see quite a few people, social workers, care workers, psychologists etc. All have their different roles, and some will tell them to man the f**k up, whilst some will take the kid climbing and have a good old friendly chat with the kid to see how they are deep down. But what you have to remember is when the kids are together they instantly forget anything they have been told because they want to show off to their friends. Get a few together and thats it, peer pressure will take over and of course they will be drinking, smoking and doing petty crimes together.

Im not saying this is the case for every kid in care, but from what I have seen, its defo a majority.

Ah, I see. I think it's just that people in general need to take more of a responsibility - parents are all to quick to hand issues off to social workers or teachers rather than dealing with them themselves.

How about telling their parents or guardians to man the f**k up?

They are in care, they dont have parents LOL Or if they do, they are in prison.

But thats the point. Like I said, there needs to be a cut off point because it will just keep continuing in a massive cirle with their kids, and their kids kids etc and I dont think any change of law will ever stop that.
