Jim can you start welding up a cage to keep Stan in please, not sure I'm too happy about him being a mod now we know his true feelings, I can feel a military coup coming on.

This *is* the point though, if you had that kind of punishment in place people would be deterred and therefore there would be no need to add further people to prison figures, plus drink-driving would be *drastically* reduced. It's about making people realise the consequences of committing crime is so severe that no matter how screwed up they are socially they just won't want to risk it.

Let's face it, the majority of people who are convicted of drink-driving aren't hardened criminals, they are just normal people who have one too many at the local and decide to take a risk on getting home without being caught as opposed to paying a £10 taxi fare and having the inconvenience of collecting the car the next morning.

Already on it, I'm going foe a sado masochistic cage with no two sides the same and not a single right-angle on it. That should annoy the living crap out of him from now until the day he dies Laugh my ass off

(Pretty much the same as anything else I make, before anyone else says it, but this time it will be intentional)

But you would bankrupt the country long before your harsh measures had time to take effect, you clown.

Putting them in prison will help show them how to be a better criminal, it doesnt add up Stan for the greater good. When they hanged people the crimes still didnt stop, like in usa on death row still has not stopped loads of murders has it.

Unless the Government tackle this particular issue head-on, you'll have more to worry about than whether I'm let loose in the vicinity. I might well have views you struggle to comprehend, but at least you can sleep at night safe in the knowledge that it won't be me who mows down one of your loved ones because I'm drunk.

The Government's answer to drink-driving? Ban people. Great idea, but people are being caught and convicted on a daily basis so the strategy obviously isn't working. A much stronger deterrent is required, although no doubt Owain will disagree and say we've got the best law on drink-driving in the entire galaxy...

Okay, let's look at that idea fairly. To find the best example, use America, as it's the country in the world with the highest incarceration rate, by quite some way:

Now let's compare that to the most extreme violent crime rates in the world. Let's go with murder, because that's easy to get stats on. If you're right, America will be by far the lowest. If you're wrong, it might be somewhere a little higher up.

Oh look, it's not just not at the bottom, it's at the top. By a long way.

America do exactly what you're suggesting - three strikes and you're in prison for a long time, regardless of the crimes. Trust the States to base their laws on baseball.

Just read the figures. If you're a black American man aged between 20 and 34 who has dropped out of high school, there is a 37% chance you're in prison.

One in THIRTY people in the States is in prison.

Go on then, I'd like to read your counter-argument as to how putting people in prison puts people off crime.

How about instead of prison, a very hefty fine and a public flogging, plus community service?

No financial burden on the country, drink drivers would actually be putting back in, and a public flogging (whipping the very skin from the soles of your feet with a birch stick would leave a lasting impression) would be an effective and very visual deterrent.
Best of all no crushing financial problems for the govenment, one or two enthusiastic volunteers could be found to do the whipping in every town in the land, family members of victims of drink drivers would be a good place to look for willing hands.

You just need to think outside the box.

Exactly, don't forget that almost all the major gangs in the States either began or flourished in prisons.

Community service is one I'd definitely approve of, plus what they do in Germany (I believe it was) - because their court and justice system is (unsurprisingly) far more efficient than ours, they often dole out small punishments, but regularly.

For example, if you got caught going 40 in a 30, you could get a one-month driving ban. Not enough to ruin your life or lose you your job (which isn't in anyone's interest), but enough to make you appreciate how hard it would be if you lost your licence, and to be more careful next time.

I bet that'd work better than threats of prison.

Not true. look at all the places that still have the death penalty, that doesnt stop people from killing anyone. And those people on death row are in prison for years before they are killed.

Go and live in a country with Sharia law, it seems you would be happier there. If you were a woman you would have got stoned to death for something you did last year!

Fair point, I was going to suggest such remedies as these. However, I thought that if I did I would be further accused of being some kind of mental zombie which loved the idea of violence. (Which I don't by the way, before somebody suggests that.)

At last, it seems we agree on a couple of points. I would love to see proper criminals doing hard labour, paying back into society and at the same time (hopefully) being rebuilt into proper respecting citizens.

However, as soon as somebody suggests ideas such as these, you start hearing phrases like "but that's against their human rights". It used to be the way it was done, but now we can't any longer condone this kind of action. And where does all this come from? The *European* Court of Human Rights. LOL

And this is one (of the many reasons) I argued a few pages back why we should get ourselves out of that over-bearing, nanny state of a constitution. However, it seemed that wasn't the way forwards. Shame really, because if we did leave Europe tomorrow I reckon we could implement the fantastic ideas that Jim has come up with overnight and make this country much better (that is possible Owain) than it already is.

No law will reduce people from drink driving cus people will do it regardless. Plenty of people out there have killed themselves through drink driving, did they think about that before going behind the wheel? Nope cus they were drunk and didnt give an S! So what law would stop them?

Have you not read a single person's reply over what seems like a thousand pages of this thread? Plenty of reasons have been stated why this is simply horses**t.

What.. like community service, that already exists? When in prison you are expected to work and study. Its not like you just sit there all day every day.

Brilliant. Interested to hear Stan in a quick fire argument. Best invite Jane Soulman to make those awkward silences more amusing.

Savour it. Will be autodeleted in time.

You know when you google something trivial about GTi6's but the link comes up as 'You are not authorised to access this thread?' - that's quite often "comedy gold" gone forever.

So... whats everyones views on public executions? Yay or nay? That would was and still could be a great deterrent for the more violent crimes. Plus it would save on the prison cost and and would even bring in revenue if it were pay per view.

    Just throwing it out there...
