My gti 6 is on a 1998 t plate but has all the phase 3 bits on it.. Is there any way of finding out if it's a genuine very early on phase 3, or
A modded phase 2?

Its a modded phase 2 at a guess, if it was a phase 3 it would be may 99 onwards as that was the changeover month iirc, when you say all the phase 3 bits on exactly what phase 3 parts have you got on it? Unsure

Not really, a 1998 t would be a mix match of both phases as the stuffed the kinds of stuff on late phase 2's
my 1999 t is phase 3 through and through and though
Do you have a rf key or an ir one?
are you clocks silver with white needles?
do you seats have airbags
is you parcel shelf a stealth shelf,

plenty more to look for.

Most of that is bolt on parts, but the RF key suggests to me that it's a P3. What would be required to convert a P2 IR car to run RF? Doubt someone would've gone to the trouble.

Is the tailgate a P3?

Also, how is the throttle cable routed? Across the engine or along the rear of the radiator? These are more clues to look out for. Thumbs up

Ok , No guard on aux belt, although it looks like the power steering pump bracket has holes in it for something?
Throttle cable across the top of the engine.

Not sure how to tell the ph3 tailgate?

Are we any closer ?

IIRC, the belt guards were removed by Pug. Due to some of them catching on the belt and causing the belt to fail.

If you sign up to Peugeot's Servicebox online parts system you can check what equipment the car left the factory with.

(Or PM me the VIN and I can check for you)

Just to clarify though, if it was registered in 1998 then it can't be a phase 3.

Phase 3 production began in May 1999.

Surely you can't have a 1998 'T' Dunno It would be an 'S' running into 1999!

A very good point, it must be a 1999 car then in that case and most likely is a P3. Yes

What phase does this make my T-reg Rallye with the IR key then?
I assume a ph3 due to the registration but other factors suggest otherwise. Or is it because it's made to be lighter that ph3 parts were restricted?

You'll need to throw money at the car. Not on parts. Just stand near your car and throw loose change at it, I find this increases performance for a short period of time

Depends when it was built and how long then it sat around before someone bought and registered it.

This is true to a point, but the *actual* date of manufacture is not taken into account on the logbook etc.
So if the logbook states it's a 1998 then that will be the date of first registration. The fact that the car has ended up on a 'T' plate is even more confusing. Confused

This was what I was trying to say, mine is a may 99 and definitely a parts bin special. If its registered in 98 it can't possibly of started life as a phase 3 as production was may99 onwards for phase 3 so it has to be a modded phase 2 at best! Roll eyes
