Wondered why they'd borrowed a car a while back, writeup is in this weeks issue vs Focus RS/Megane etc.

Saw this earlier
Was quite positive of the old gal
However the specs section was a fail
They said 130mph top speed and 0-60 in 7.8

Yes, it was my Rallye. I had to drive it from Devon on Tuesday 28 Aug to the Chobham Test Track in Surrey for the cover shot. Then we set off to Lake Bala in N.Wales for filming on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was a fun couple of days (some 800 miles) but unfortunately I was not able to drive the other cars. Nic, the Autocar jounalist, really did enjoy driving the Rallye though. So for a 13 year old car, it stood up remarkably well in comparison with much newer beasts.
That makes 2010, 2011 and 2012 that the car has been in Autocar. It must be worth a fortune now!

Car looks well in the mag. Are those really 55 SXs? Look more like 50 RS2s.

Very observant! Yes, you're right. Nic was reading the original spec, I think, rather than the actual car.

Good write-up. Agree with the "sublime drive on any road" comment. While cars and especially interiors have come a long way since the 1990s driving enjoyment has not necessarily improved.

1240 for a clio 200, old ST170 focus was over 1200, newer 5 pot turbo ST is a lardy bas**rd at nearly 1400! newest has gone back to a duratec 2.0 turbo though as they lost out on the volvo lumps as they sold the company.

earlier clios were lighter but a lot smaller, more 206 sized so comparing to a 306 isnt fair IMO.

Earlier meganes more of a direct comparison which was lighter but the only sporty one they did had an engine similar to the williams clio at only 150 bhp, later meganes cheat with a turbo but are over 1250.
