Ash - at least until there's been some discussion, can you just turn off the script that deletes the old threads?

Generally speaking the forum runs absolutely fine these days, and any issues it has aren't due to the number of rows in the tables. There are countless old classic threads people enjoy reading that have been locked, so people can't even bump them up to make them stay.

Disk space is practically free these days, I don't see the need for auto-deleting them at all; there's never any new content appearing anymore as everyone assumes it's already been covered, it's just the site slowly committing suicide.

Basically - there is zero need to auto-delete old threads. By all means in time you could have it that any thread with more than five thanks gets kept and the rest get deleted or something, but until then can we please just disable the deletion job?

just do what 205drivers site does and archive them into older sub sections if needbe like 2008-2009-2010 etc. then again it makes no odds really

I haven't even been around long and I agree. I've been reading through a lot of project threads and a fair number of the useful links in those threads aren't available any more, it's a shame the useful info isn't there.

Plus the b**ching threads as well Big grin

Part of the problem is that initially there was obviously a big build-up of data and guides over the course of years, then for the next few years (certainly the meagre few years I've been here) the majority of advice is just "here's the FAQ" or "do a search, it's been covered".

The problem with deleting old threads is that you're removing all the original content, leaving just a load of arsy replies from people linking to threads which no longer exist, and that does not make for a good forum.

Best thing to do is to not read F.A.Q's. Problem solved.

I agree. The threads all have TTL's against them, the length of which depends on which section the thread in question resides. Yes

It is something I think should be looked into, there are some classic threads from back in the day which it would be nice if they were accessible. Smile

I'll have a word with the Captain and see what can be done. Thumbs up

I appreciate Ash won't want to get into some massive development effort, which is why I say for now just to disable the job that does the deletes.

We're all paying for the hosting now, so there's no excuse for deleting content that people are paying to use.

I agree, and if theres any ability to bring back older threads which have been archived please could you resurrect these ones:
http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=101100&page=1
http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=79499&page=1
http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=125347&page=1

I have them in my bookmarks so i'm assuming they were useful when i read them ages ago, pretty sure they were useful info on brakes and suspension from memory.

Cheers. Smile

Nope, pretty sure the problem is that they're actually hard-deleted. I.e. gone. Forever. Loads of links I've been to recently have been deleted.

...so we are gradually deleting all the technical know-how that makes people want to pay up in the first place? Did no-one actually think this through?

Sounds like something a public sector organisation would do. Except we aren't wasting billions of pounds of other people's money.

By all means delete cr@p that has no lasting value, but there needs to be a bit of common sense applied otherwise WTFP?

Exactly. I must admit I'm more on here for the chat (and a break from work) these days, and if that was all that was left we could just set up a free Google Group or something to do that.
