Hi,

Sadly after 8 years ownership it looks like im on the verge of losing the gti. Cambelt appears to have let go at 65mph on M1 tonight Sad

It had cambelt and pulleys etc done 2.5 years ago (20k) so i'm not sure if the parts have a warranty that long?

Anyway how much am i looking at to repair? Guessing all valves will be shafted

Its a Phase 2 Nile, 108k, 3 owners from new, FSH, MOT until August would i get much breaking for parts? should i sell as it is if so how much?

Does anyone buy them to repair?

looking at either 600ish for a new head or a few hundred for a replacement engine

Carl aka mechanical repairs use to buy them, might be worth a try?

It's work very little as is but breaking is is a pain as your bound to be left with a shell and random stuff

Condition of the car will decide its fate on to repair or not ?

Its in good condition, mint interior. Cant fit the head etc myself so would have to pay labour.

The kit i have fitted 28k ago was a full gates kit, would this not be under warranty as the pug recommendation is 40k, 4 years?

Nope sadly after a rise in owners breaking them/buying breakers under the pretence they can make hayday money and giving the parts away in the last year you'll be stuck with loads of shit you don't want to be in possession of.

Fix if you need the car, sell if you don't ~Rat's value tbh that's too high so expect to take less but it's gone.

As said chuck a new engine in but factor in a full service and cambelt replacement on the bought engine. Or whip the head off and either get it skimmed and replace the valves etc or just buy a good head.

I agree that too many are being broken it's quite sad tbh.

But it will cost at least a grand easy to get the head taken off sorted and put back on ? Labour + head work + gaskets bolts fluids etc will easy come to £1000

Replacement engine + Cam belt kit + fitting = win if you can do it your self Yes

thanks for replies, trouble is i was planning on selling next month as its my second car and was going to change for a Civic or Corolla T sport so unfortunately its better for me financially to break it or sell as is than throw another £1000 at it. Sad

Wasn't being rude Jeffers but would you really go to all the effort of changing the head or paying someone to do it to find its a piece of sh1t ? Maybe I'm just a sinicale old cvnt ?

Hmm again i see ur point, i would be inclined to think that the worst case scenario with that head is a couple of bent valves from incorrect removal (probably cyl 3).... hardly the hardest thing to fix if u know how..... and again its not smashed up! Roll eyes

Rich W had a fully rebuilt engine for £550?

    clicky

Good buy if you can fit it yourself imo? Yes

Breaking is a ball ache, I didn't take a single part off my '6 but it was still a lot of hassle having it hanging around waiting for bits to go! Sad No I lie I took the seats out. LOL

Been quoted £165 to buy the shell for scrap less Wheels, Seats, Alloy Rad, exhaust and Airfilter/samco which i will sell seperate

That engine is a good deal but £550 + £75 delivery + fitting just isn't viable

Hence why in my post I suggested both options.

You can look at the "value" of the car or look at what you would need to spend for something of equivalent performance, especially if you average it over 8 years.

Spend (say) £3K+ changing your car or fix it for a fraction of the cost.

Cars are not cost free, especially performance cars.

How many tanks of petrol is £650? Fix it.

    Thanks, sent you a PM

It appears the cam pulley shattered rather than the belt snap.
