Very interesting, will have to do some more research here to see if it actually is stainless. If so, you learn something new everyday...________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

I never knew that, but it is nice to know its stainless I suppose, at least it matches the rest of the exhaust system. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

That would add up then, as said the pipes were not rusty just had the rusty colouring but very light in shade. So can mild steel be welded to stainless and still work ?________________________________________ Pug fee`ver,Pick a Bogey, buy a Pug. Black 306 GTI 6 Standard, was 60k mileage, bargain!! I would imagine that to be the case if the manifold is constructed as Welshpug says. Interesting discussion though as I had no idea it was stainless. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

Yes, you can weld mild to stainless with appropriate wire/rods.________________________________________ - Bespoke rollcages/additions/adjustments. 309 or 312 welds dissimilar joints quite nicely, the flange as said is mild steel and the pipes themselves are most likely 304 or 308, low grade stainless for sure but more than up to the job in hand.________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies. heres another random point about the grade of stainless steel.from my electrolysis hho experiments which practically turn the metal electrodes into rust. unless you use the correct grade of ss, my plates have been submerged in water and sodium hydroxide for over 2 years and electrolysed every month or so. and there is not even a tarnish mark on one of the 84 plates! in fact there as shiny as the day i bought them. its 316L marine grade A4, i have no idea on its applications as exhaust material but as for keeping its shine its.......pretty damn good. ________________________________________ the world is changed by people in sheds |

Not sure what sort of temperatures exhaust manifolds reach but red hot is enough to oxidise 316 so it probably wouldn't maintain it's shine for long. ________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies.
