Well I have just finished my first tank of fuel, worked out to 31mpg, mixed miles (½ motorway ½ A and B roads).

It has been running cold (around 75 degrees on the gauge), I think the thermostat was being a little too enthusiastic! So with a new thermostat I should be getting around 34 - 35 I think, not too bad considering I don't hang around!

No-one with a GTI6 should be competing to get the best MPG!

FWIW I have generally seen:
Ducati 748 110bhp 50mpg
Honda Fireblade 918cc 40mpg
GTI6 164bhp 28mpg
GTI6SC 236bhp 24mpg
335i 306bhp 24mpg
Clio 197 182bhp 23mpg
M5 394bhp 17mpg
GTI6SC 335bhp 7.5mpg (track-only)

LOL

But theres a difference with some people, some of us are in our 30s + and have houses and children to feed, and that means not constantly feeding a car with fuel to just burn it too quickly.

On the other hand if folk are getting really p*ss poor mpg they are ragging the arse out of it, good luck but im a driver for a living and depend on my licence to earn a crust lol

I found my 6 was a good compromise between fun and economy. Mixed driving i was getting around 35mpg, bearing in mind i used it to get to work and back all week and a bit more "fun" driving at the weekend.

The 182 i've just sold was brilliant on fuel, steady motorway run and you'd get 45mpg.

Wink

use the gears, not the loud pedal, you'll get even more.

on a side note my phase one 1.4 306 got about 20 mpg. After a complete service (o2 sensor, oil etc etc) it was getting around 35mpg (what it should of been).

in its last few months after i had stripped nearly all the insides away (100kgs lighter), and cut away a rather large section of my rear bumper (aerodynamics) mpg was around 40 - 50. the rear bumper bodge was noticable at higher speeds (past 60) on roads/motorways, pulled through the gears easier

in my experience mpg quests that go beyond the oem specification of a vehicle generally ruin it.

Go on then, enlighten me as to why I should ignore all my driver training and 17 years of driving experience and follow that advice.

In the few weeks I've owned my six, I've got a range of between 25mpg and 30 mpg. So average really..

Economy isn't why you buy a GTI-6 though, is it!

Having a torquey engine potentially allows use of a higher gear in certain situations, which is in itself more economical.

3rd would be higher than 1st or 2nd. So surely there would be a situation where you would use 3rd. Its probably more economical than ragging 2nd...

fail

Not tried it I have only used the method posted and seems to work very well, I once drove from Lille to Calais on 5 euro petrol in a 6 and when entering the dock I could only pray my car would make the climb onto the ship, Had £8 English and that got me home to Tooting from Dover Crazy I know but true and had many more petrol frights mainly because I'm a tight git.
