i dont know if your dead set on a icv but i had nothing but issues on mine im now using without one and its 100 times more reliable and stable. I now control it through scatter spark via the omex. ________________________________________ 1990 205 gti6 supercharged |

Not much in terms of updates worth posting.I've decided to abort the idea of the icv as it was proving to be a pain like you said stef, so for the time being i've just made a gasket and covered the hole in the plenum. I've made a new wiring loom to suit my dta ecu, that seemed to take an age to complete, but it's pretty much there now, just need to wire the tacho wire to the clocks and one other switched live and thats complete. I got a base map to try and get the engine running n/a just to check the ecu worked but it appears that the ecu is faulty. In fairness i did buy it as untested so it was sold as spares or repairs. The problem seems to be that the injectors are constantly open as soon as the ignition is on, i got in touch with dta about it and they want £75 to repair the injector drivers. Instead i took the ecu apart and it looks to be the transistor that is faulty that does the injectors, so i've just bought an identical model off ebay and i'm going to have a go at replacing it myself. Hopefully that will arrive tomorrow so i can get started on that. The down side of this is that i'm now sure that i flooded my engine, so i reckon the fresh oil will now be contaminated with petrol. I've also made a small adapter that means i can control two throttle cables with the throttle pedal, i wanted to use two standard throttle cables but in the end it seemed much easier to just buy a set of push bike brake cables and adapt them, which is what i'm in the process of doing now. Progress was hampered a little when the headgasket on my other gti6 (the daily) went last week, so i wasted all my evenings last week stripping the head off that, getting it skimmed then rebuilding it, that also took up the money i was going to use to have the track car mapped. On the bright side the daily now starts like a dream and runs much better than it did before. EDIT: It seems i've done a few more things to the car since the last update, i'll get some photos up tomorrow when i hopefully have a bit more motivation to do stuff ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |

Glad youve decided to ditch the icv what an arse it was on mine! what control does the dta have for idle strategies? Two throttle cables sounds like youve been hanging around mr storer! ________________________________________ 1990 205 gti6 supercharged |

Two throttle cables is always a good idea, got sick of breaking them on the bloody buggy and did the same :________________________________________ - Bespoke rollcages/additions/adjustments. Ffs Allan, i thought that was our little secret? I'm unsure on the strategy for idle control, just had a look round DTAWin but nothing jumped out at me. Alex at DTA did say something along the lines of idle by ignition, though he sometimes seems quite vague when i've asked him things in the past. I'll leave the idle problem to the mapper, although i ran the engine just fine with the old ecu and no icv once i'd stopped all the air leaks. The transistor still hasnt turned up so i can't get that fitted tonight, hopefully it will turn up tomorrow. ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |

Not sure about yours, but on the S-series DTA's, you can just crack the throttle open a bit at idle so it runs at ~1250-rpm ish (basically whatever you want the cold idle to be) and pull the idle down to under 1k by using next to zero ignition advance, or even a bit of retard. You can use the PWM mapping for idle control (hit the 'by ignition' checkbox) to create a map for advancing the ignition if the idle drops below target, and you can put a full temperature/time map in there to give fast idle when cold, etc, as well as an adaptive control to adjust it away from the map if it deviates in different weather conditions, etc. The only issue is the emissions can be a bit more tricky with the throttle open and less advance, but it's not generally too bad so long as you don't go nuts with the idle. If you get it right it can respond much faster than an ICV would - you can usually let the clutch out with no throttle and it'll compensate so fast the car will just drive off. Handy for shunting around town with paddle clutches If it doesn't have that in the '48, you can do a crude version in the idle corner of the main map, pull all the timing out at idle, and have a cell below idle at, say, 700rpm with the advance back in. ________________________________________ - Bespoke rollcages/additions/adjustments. Thanks for that Phill, I've just been having another look in the dtawin software under the General engine settings section and wondered what i should have set under the 'Firing tooth on startup'?[Image lost] ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |

1 or 2 is usually fine, it's just which tooth it fires the ignition on before the engine is running properly for a clean signal. Have it up too high and the engine tries to go backwards when it fires ________________________________________ - Bespoke rollcages/additions/adjustments. Thanks Phill. My new transistor still hasnt arrived, despite paying extra for first class postage and estimated delivery being wednesday. I've had a sniff of the oil today and it stinks of petrol from when the ecu basically flooded the engine by holding the injectors open whenever i turned the ignition on and the fuel pumps primed, so it needs fresh oil before i dare start it up once the transistor arrives. A bit annoying as its brand new oil. Anyway, a few pics of recent progress. IMG_5039 by Steve Count, on Flickr The second one in from the left is the 'injector driver' which needs replacing. Mounted a new coil pack to the head, i've got some HT leads from a corsa which seem to be a pretty decent match. IMG_4973 by Steve Count, on Flickr The wiring loom in it's early days. IMG_4974 by Steve Count, on Flickr Virtually all the wires run in plastic braiding, and a mate had a genius idea of knowing what each wire was, made life much easier when finishing the loom off. IMG_5007 by Steve Count, on Flickr Added a few relays, one for each fuel pump (one also does the heating on the lambda too), the middle is for the ecu, and the two on the right are for the two cooling fans. IMG_4978 by Steve Count, on Flickr Trimmed the slam panel to clear the boost pipes. IMG_5049 by Steve Count, on Flickr IMG_5064 by Steve Count, on Flickr IMG_5047 by Steve Count, on Flickr Also had to fettle a bit of the headlight Also trimmed a bit of the bumper. It would benefit from a bit more material being removed but it fits for mocking up purposes. Finally starting to look more like a car again now IMG_5052 by Steve Count, on Flickr IMG_5050 by Steve Count, on Flickr I've given the slam panel a lick of paint after cleaning the rust off, so it shouldn't look so shabby once properly fitted. ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |

Thanks chris.Did a little more today, made a cradle to hold the ecu and made a shroud for the radiator so most of the air should be forced through the radiator keeping the temps down, also gave the intercooler a light mist with some matt black spray, i'm not a big fan of in-your-face intercoolers so this should help keep it subtle at the expense of a small amount of efficiency. Thanks.Yeah it is quite close but i've tried rocking the engine (virtually no movement with my new top mount), and there isnt a lot of movement in the intercooler either with the way it's mounted so i dont think there will be any rubbing/cutting issues. I'll keep an eye on it though as the engine will probably rock a tiny bit when it's actually under load rather than me trying to rock it by hand. I also sorted my satchshift out today, i was having issues with the link bar from the selector to the gearstick rubbing on the bulkhead hole meaning i couldnt select 2nd gear. I can now select all gears thankfully. I haven't tried fitting the revised rubber boot thing though as i cant imagine getting a drill anywhere near where it needs to be will be an easy task and it was late in the evening when i was finishing off. I've got one of them plastic screen wash bag things to fit too, i'm not sure where is the best place to put it though, the only real place that it'll fit is on the bulkhead to the right of the exhaust manifold but i'm not convinced the heat from the exhaust won't melt it. ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |
