Thanks. Thumbs up
I cant really say i've noticed much difference from fitting the undertray to be totally honest.
Driving to germany was pretty grim in terms of noise, i tried drowning out the exhaust with some loud music down my headphones, but thats still very bad for your ears so i was deaf for a while after each long journey. I have used ear plugs before and they make it more bearable.
I only go to the 'ring once a year so i can put up with it, most journeys are only an hour or two max where the noise doesnt get chance to do so much damage.

Minor update. Me and the car ended up in the Performance French Car magazine whilst at the French Car Show. Big grin

IMG_1941 by Steve Count, on Flickr

The backbox wasn't sat in the middle of the bumper cutout which was bugging me, so i set about modifying one of the brackets today. Only got a picture in the middle of modifying the old one, and a finished position shot, but you get the idea.

Just booked myself on to a couple of trackdays, one is on the 22nd of September at Anglesey, the other is on the 2nd of November at Oulton park.

After these i think she'll be off the road for a couple of months whilst i get the suspension and brakes up to a spec i'm happy with. Smile

Anglesey was a good laugh, started the day off hanging a bit from the night before but after a few hours that wore off and i was fighting fit again. LOL

We bagged ourselves a garage as the spares were on a first come first served basis, so that saved us £30 odd.

IMG_1959 by Steve Count, on Flickr

I ordered a spare battery to use with my camera but the guy i bought it from on ebay was very optimistic with his delivery times from china and i'm still waiting for it, as a result my camera ran out of battery mid-morning so i didnt get any footage once i had got to know the track properly.

Heres the last bit of footage i got before it went flat.
Clicky

I've got some knocks coming from the car now, so when theres a weekend with nice weather i'm going to have to have a proper look round the car to see if i can find where its coming from, although if everything goes to plan half the car's current suspension will be gone for next years trackdays. I didn't have a proper nosey at many other cars there, i was just chuffed that they didnt really seem to be pulling away from me throughout the day.

There was a nice 106 there, running 260bhp at the wheels with reduced boost, but i think they had issues at some point and it spent the afternoon on its trailer. Sad

Weather was bang on, think it's the first dry trackday i've been to this year, so the tyres took a bit of a beating. Devil

What did you think of Anglesey Steve? I quite like it for a change like.... You boys thought about where your stayin the night before Oulton? I think I'm going to stay at the premier travel inn just down from the shell petrol station as the place I have stayed at in tarporley doesn't really have the parking room to house a car with a trailer on the back where as te travel in does so the decision is easy really lol! Let's know if ur gonna stay at the same place and we'll meet for beers! Thumbs up

I quite enjoyed Anglesey, i'd do it again but it doesnt have the same appeal to me as Cadwell does for some reason. I think i'd want a slippy diff before going back though as the inside wheel was always wanting to light up on most of the hairpins, and my brakes are in a bit of a state now with all the pad material melted onto the discs (bloody ds2500's).

The pub/hotel you recommended near Anglesey was bang on. Thumbs up

I need to speak to Rob at some point about what we're doing the night before Oulton, as it's a bit up in the air at the minute.

EDIT: Which premier inn are you booked into, the sandiway one or the northwich south one?

The one I normally use iirc is Sandiway as it has s decent car park although don't quote me til I book it! I always get mixed up as to which one it is! I'll book it this week and confirm! Thumbs up

Just had it on a rolling road. Everyone else was getting the figures they were expecting, a standard rallye made 165bhp after mine had been on.
This is what goldie achieved:
[Image lost, think it was 182BHP @ flywheel from memory]

Pretty chuffed with that. Cool

Standard internals as far as i'm aware. Billet flywheel, ally crank pulley. Only a little alternator and PAS pump running on the aux belt.
Pipercross viper induction kit, decatted exhaust (I think it's magnex decat but can't say for sure) with small proflow centre box and 3" magnex backbox.

Seems optimistic to me but everyone else achieved what they expected. Dunno
She certainly seems to pull well though.

Update time:

I replaced the rose joints on my droplinks as some had got a little bit of play in them, and i hadn't used any boots to protect them from dirt etc.
Whilst they were off i milled some spanner flats at each end as it makes it much easier to tighten the locknut with them there. I was going to turn the centres down as they are too heavy but i didnt get chance before i needed them back on my car for the latest trackday. That will have to wait for another day.

IMG_1977 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_1976 by Steve Count, on Flickr

When i refitted them i used some sealing boots lined with grease to hopefully protect them a bit from the elements this time.

I also fitted new anti roll bar bushes.

There's been a knock for some time now, it's really being getting on my nerves so whilst the front end was on axle stands i got my pry bar and tried to find play in all the joints, i couldn't find any but checked the torque on the P bushes and subframe, and finally got round to fitting some fine pitch bolts to clamp round the balljoints and did them to the correct torque.

I took it for a test drive with the rainsport 2's on and the knock appeared to have gone.

I took it to Oulton park yesterday, the morning started off wet/damp with very limited grip (spinning up in 3rd with ease in places), still no knocking. As the morning went on the track dried and grip improved (druids stayed a bit dicey for quite a long time).

After dinner i decided to head down to the local petrol station to fill up again, en route the brakes sounded nice and grindy. I knew what the issue was but there wasn't a lot i could do about it until i got back to the track. I knew the pads were running low before the day (2-3mm material left), but couldn't justify buying any more pads as i have some 4 pots to fit over winter. Anywho here is the result.

IMG_1985 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_1986 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Doh

I had some spare standard pads with me so was about to fit them when jeffers brought me his spare DS2500's. Top man! Thumbs up

I fitted them, took it for a few test laps round the carpark, they felt ok so i ventured back out on track. (Session 3 of the videos, hence why i take it a bit steady to start with).

They worked fine the rest of the afternoon but i left the footage from the last trackday on the cameras memory card like an idiot so i ran out of space and didn't get any footage of when the track was dry and i was on form.

Back to the knocking, it can be heard in the videos, it's hard to trace where it's coming from though because the roll cage links the rear beam mounting points and the front turrets, so noise just surrounds you. It can be felt through the steering wheel sometimes, so i'm beginning to think the most likely culprit could be top mount bearings, ball joints or the wishbone bushes. It does it when accelerating, braking and throwing weight from one side to the other.
I'll be replacing the beam over winter, adjustable topmounts are also on the cards, if they don't stop it i'll have to look further into it.

Here are the videos.
Near miss around 11:30 in session 1. Laugh

Great thread mate, love it!

Scary when someone spins infront of you and you have no idea where they are going to end up!!!

Thanks James, first time someone has spun infront of me, its hard to tell from the video but my car is slightly sideways once he spins. My theory was to try and aim for where he was and hope he would end up flying off to one side. LOL

Got loads of plans for the car Chris, only problem is they are all fairly expensive ones so i'm just saving at the moment, and waiting for some bits to be made. Ninja

Time for a small update.

The rear beam has had some unintentional negative camber for a while now, enough for the tyre to start wearing into the arch liner on the nearside. I've been collecting bits for it for ages now and decided to get it sorted whilst the weather has been reasonable.

IMG_2041 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_2042 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_2047 by Steve Count, on Flickr

New febi bilstein trailing arm shafts, good thing with these is the bore is about 30.9mm from memory, so don't need any work doing to them for the 30mm arb to fit.
New beam bearings, seals, washers etc.
21mm VTS torsion bars.
30mm ARB which i drilled and tapped the ends M8 to make fitting the end plates easier.

Friday evening involved stripping the beam down so i could take the trailing arms into work on Saturday to press the shafts out.

IMG_2048 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_2051 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_2054 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Torsion bar puller i made, didn't end up using it too much as the torsion bars were a bit tight and i didn't want to strip any of the threads or snap the bolt.

IMG_2050 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Worn old shaft.

IMG_2059 by Steve Count, on Flickr
Both were worn.

IMG_2057 by Steve Count, on Flickr
New vs. old.

To my suprise the beam tube was flawless inside, i was half expecting it to be corroded to hell in there.

Saturday morning i pressed the old shafts out and fitted the new ones.

IMG_2060 by Steve Count, on Flickr

I made a crude drift for knocking the old bearings out and tapping the new ones into place.

IMG_2067 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_2068 by Steve Count, on Flickr

IMG_2069 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Inner bearing in 200mm.

IMG_2071 by Steve Count, on Flickr
Trailing arms back on.

I took the ARB and end plates into the kitchen to find a position where both ends would line up perfectly then wound one end on fully ready for fitting.

Sunday i refitted as much as necessary to get the car back on all 4 wheels, suspecting that it may now sit a bit too high.

IMG_2074 by Steve Count, on Flickr
Doh

Both sides were within 2mm of each other though when measuring to the top of the wheel arch, which i was quite chuffed about. (It had taken me quite a while tapping a torsion bar into place, checking the distance between the hub and top of the wheel arch when under its own weight then if i wasn't happy removing the torsion bar, rotating it and trying again).

Back up on axle stands it went, i lowered it around 30mm and refitted everything, and refitted the dampers.

IMG_2081 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Got the wheels back on and checked the height again.

IMG_2083 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Much happier with that, i preferred the arch gap with the higher position but the rear end just looked way too high. As it is now the kw/koni dampers just needed compressing a few mm to line them up with the mounting bolts, previously i had to jack up the trailing arm to get the mounting bolts to line up.

I made my own slide hammer for removing the torsion bars, it's a bit of a monstrosity as i made it out of bits of scrap that were lying around at work. It did the job though so i can't complain.

IMG_2070 by Steve Count, on Flickr

Hopefully there will be more updates coming in a few weeks once some other parts arrive. Cool

Thanks to welshpug for making his comprehensive guide in the FAQ, it would have been much more daunting to tackle without that to refer to. Thumbs up

Nice update Steve Wink How does the rear compare to the standard one now that you have the 21mm TBs and the thicker ARB? Is that a hybrid one?
Mine should get installed by Carl very soon so next spring/summer we can have a few laps on the ring Wink

I haven't been able to test it out yet mate, she still isnt taxed and i havent fitted the battery yet, so i was just using some jump leads and resting the battery in the engine bay to move it around.
The arb is a 30mm all the way along one, i think the hybrids go down to 24mm at one end.

I can't wait for the ring trip. Hyper

Cheers lads.

I thought you'd bought another gti6 mainly to steal the good beam off Chris?
If you do need a hand i suppose i could come down, i don't have my own press though and think i'd struggle to get the 50 ton one at work in the boot. Laugh

I'd been putting the beam off for ages, hoping to go down a different route but that's been delayed for a while so i decided to tackle it, it really wasnt as hard as i was expecting. Smile
