I just bought a load of fine pitch nylocs from ebay, Pretty sure the big ones are M14x1.5 and the smaller ones are M12x1.5, i bought them to replace the nuts you are on about, and conveniently the M14 ones will fit my coilovers ready for when i slap some new topmounts on. ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |

Cheers Steve, will have a look on ebay.Managed to get an hour or so free time on saturday so thought I would attack some more of the beam. Half of the work was cleaning it up, and trying to de-rust some of the nuts etc. Got the brakes off, but the disc protector bolts are corroded to s**t, not idea how im going to get them off hmm rusty So I moved on to try and get the torsion bars out. Now, I dont have a slide hammer and Im not keeping these bars as I am getting new thicker ones, so I decided to just smash them out with a hammer This worked fine for one, but the other didnt seem to want to budge. Sprayed a load of WD40 on it, and left it for another day. As I am keeping the trailing arm shafts, can someone confirm this looks ok? Seems fine to me, but I dont really know what Im looking for. ________________________________________ Chris1999 China Gti6 Supercharged [Fun car] >>Project Thread<< 2000 Bianca 306 Diesel [Work runabout] |

RE the disc protectors, I wouldn't worry too much about corrosion. My 309 beam looked like it had been dredged from a canal but they aren't tightened to 200lbft so should come out fine with the appropriate bit knocked in and undone. Or if that fails, vise grips around them.As for the trailing arm shafts, I've recently had 3 beams apart, all of which were camber free and none of the shafts are perfect if you want to be fussy. If you clean that grease off and there's any pitting to the shaft from the needles - you're best to replace them. People do press them out and twist them around, but for the sake of £100 for a new pair is it worth potentially reducing the life of the new bearings? Do it once, do it right. ________________________________________ |

Pretty sure that shaft is knackered looking at the rusty bearing marks where the outer bearing sits ________________________________________ Red GTB1756 powered Fabia VRS daily driver,LBSC Gti6 eater........Mac1 ZR R1 kit car build in progress. |

Oh tits!Well, ive decided that I am not going to build the beam myself, just going to take a box of parts to someone who knows what they are doing and get them to put it all together, and they can be the judge if bits need replacing. Also, what machining needs to be done to fit a bigger ARB? ________________________________________ Chris1999 China Gti6 Supercharged [Fun car] >>Project Thread<< 2000 Bianca 306 Diesel [Work runabout] |

There are a few deals on shafts at the moment. Neat do a pair for around £100 I think it is.If you buy a bigger ARB the splined ends should be the standard dimensions to fit in your current end plates. ________________________________________ |

I thought that the hybrid was the biggest you could fit without having to modify something? I am getting a 30mm ARB. ________________________________________ Chris1999 China Gti6 Supercharged [Fun car] >>Project Thread<< 2000 Bianca 306 Diesel [Work runabout] |

You need to have the trailing arms drilled out to get the ARB through I believe, it's too thick to fit through the normal hole.________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

Always heard it referred to as "machining" so assume it would of been something more complex ________________________________________ Chris1999 China Gti6 Supercharged [Fun car] >>Project Thread<< 2000 Bianca 306 Diesel [Work runabout] |

Well they're massive and cast iron, so you can't exactly just get out your Black and Decker and have a bash, they need to be done on a proper milling machine, so yes they do need doing by a proper place PS I've never had this done, so don't assume it's what you have to do ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

I did mine in a lathe not a mill and used a 31.5mm drill bit. Did the job nicely but I could only drill about halfway from each end as the drill wasn't long enough to reach all the way through from one end meaning I had to take the tube out and turn it around to be able to drill the full length but it was no big drama.________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies. Curiosity.I believe going above 23mm torsion bars means that if you wish to remove the bars after to change the height the trailing arms will need to come out as the torsion bars wont fit through the holes as they are thicker than the splined ends. Just something to note if you hadn't thought of it. ________________________________________ |

Cheers for the heads up Dan I hadnt thought of it, but hopefully shouldnt have to change the height once its set (he says). And if I do, hopefully it will come apart a lot easier than this time if most of the bits are new and not a corroded rusty state. ________________________________________ Chris1999 China Gti6 Supercharged [Fun car] >>Project Thread<< 2000 Bianca 306 Diesel [Work runabout] |

You can get some trailing arm shafts that already have a bore big enough fit a 30mm arb through.I got a pair of Febi Bilstein ones for around £108, my 30mm arb went through fine. ________________________________________ Goldie the track car. |

So, planned to do some work on the car this weekend, but instead spent my time driving it instead. Went out for about an hour or so to remind me that in some cars the pedal on the right actually does something (I drive a NAD 306 daily...)And sticking with the ongoing theme of using it breaks it, my new issues are: - Odeometer has stopped working. Trip has reset to 0 and doesnt add any miles to that or total mileage. - Brake lights now constantly on.. not good! Any ideas? I will try and check out the brake light switch up behind the dash if I can find someone with girly arms that can reach it While I was out, had a quick "wet acceleration test" on a closed industrial estate. Not great at all, but took a video of it anyways and a picture of my pimping driveway ________________________________________ Chris1999 China Gti6 Supercharged [Fun car] >>Project Thread<< 2000 Bianca 306 Diesel [Work runabout] |
