I got the engine enamel & caliper paint from a seller called usauto1997 on eBay. The iPhone won't allow me to copy links from the eBay ap.The brembo stickers came from eBay too, I got 8 for about 3 quid delivered, I'm not 100% sure they are the right size but they look close ________________________________________ Get used to seeing the yellow one !!!Team 330™ Team "no front end or engine" Team "LIMITED EDITION" I live for the 306 sticker Team 0-60 in 6.44 & standing qtr in 14.808 @ 94.55mph all with std engine 203bhp Corolla T-Sport daily driver stealthier than Kwai Chang Caine |

midlife wrote: Small update time... I got round to lapping in the two new valves today & then stuck what I could get of it into my shiney new parts washer. I then set about fitting the freshly bored replacement block on my engine stand. I'm waiting for valve stem oil seals, water pump, race spec bearings, head bolts & Richw uprated head gasket to arrive in the post so I decided to paint the block. WARNING SUNGLASSES REQUIRED....... First off I masked up the block, any threads, mounting points, top & bottom. This is what I got to paint it with. Now I did say get your sunnies on didn't I... Now my roots are in rallying & I was always taught that everything under the bonnet should be painted a light colour (normally White) so you can see problematic oil leaks more easily, I'll be able to see a dead fly on this fooker from a mile away It should be nicely cured next week for when I'll hopefully start putting it back together. yeah!!!! team yellow ________________________________________ Ph2 Black GTI 6!EX black 6 owner But now a Black caged rallye owner Hunting for Go faster bits! Update time again.....I took a few things to the garage today to make a start on putting the engine back together.. The main bearing caps were filthy so went in the parts washer. First I fitted the oil spray bars I then fitted the main bearing halves into the block, coated them liberally in assembly lube & put the crank in place. All the main bearing caps are numbered 1~5 with number 1 at the flywheel end, this cap has a rubber seal at each end that looks like a hockey stick, £1.16 + vat each from the stealers. When I stripped the engine there was a small oil leak from these seals so I put some RTV silicone rubber sealant on to help things a little. All main bearing caps throughly cleaned, bearings fitted, plenty of assembly lube, caps fitted & torqued down. There are also 4 shims that fit around bearing No2 to limit crank float, I didn't forget to fit them I was concentrating on putting them in properly & just forgot to take a pic Now we get to the expensive bit.... Wossner low compression pistons & Max Speeding rods. The tricky bit was fitting the spring clips, I was convinced I'd lose one, in this instance I was lucky, for once!!!! Fit a spring clip at one side of the piston then with a little bit of assembly lube push the pin in from the opposite side. Put the little end of the rod into the gap & push the pin through into the other side of the piston up against the spring clip, remembering to use assembly lube & the fit the spring clip in the other end to trap the pin. Eventually after what seemed like ages they were all together.. Fitting the rings was easier than I remember in the past, there were a total of 5 rings to fit into 3 ring grooves. Bottom groove, 2 very thin rings, 1 either side of the oil scraper ring. Middle groove, thin ring. Top groove, thick ring. All fitted.... Now I'm ready to fit them into the block, I spec'd my rods to come with ARP L19 con rod bolts, my problem is I don't have any ARP lube to torque them up with, I now know what the torque setting should be though (thanks Meirion). Looks like I'll have to source some ARP lube from somewhere. Left it there, it was getting late & I didn't want to risk rushing to fit the pistons into the block & possibly f*ck the rings up! I'm back in the garage tomorrow so I'll post another update then. ________________________________________ Get used to seeing the yellow one !!!Team 330™ Team "no front end or engine" Team "LIMITED EDITION" I live for the 306 sticker Team 0-60 in 6.44 & standing qtr in 14.808 @ 94.55mph all with std engine 203bhp Corolla T-Sport daily driver stealthier than Kwai Chang Caine |

Oh man, I'd kill to be able to do engine rebuilds, but seeing as I can't even remove and replace the ashtray without having bits left over I think it's probably not going to happen. Keep up the good work matey, really good thread. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

Another update....Removed the ARP L19 bolts & split the first big end, made sure the piston ring gaps were opposite each other & fitted the piston ring compressor. Then fitted the big end bearing half into the rod, assembly lubes up the bore & journal on the crank & carefully put the assembly into the block until it was resting on the ring compressor. At this point make sure that the ring compressor is sitting perfectly flush to the block & tap the top of the piston with the end of the shaft of a BFH, the piston slowly slides into the bore. TFFT!!!! Now tip the block on it's side & push the piston into the bore whilst guiding the end of the rod to fit snugly against the journal on the crank. Once in place fit the other half of the bearing into the end cap, coat with assembly lube, slot into place & fit the 2 bolts. There is an arrow on the crown on each piston & fingers crossed they should point towards the front of the engine, before I split each rod I marked an arrow on each cap in the same direction as the one on the crown so it all went back together correctly. Before long... Now because I've not got any ARP lube yet I can't torque up the big ends so that means that I can't fit th oil pump etc & get the sump on so I finished off by bolting a few bits & bats onto the block. This is where the parts washer came into it's own, all the bits were covered in dirty oil & road grime, 10 minutes in the washer & a good going over with a toothbrush cleaned things up nicely. This is where I'm up to now... I've bought some ARP lube off eBay so hopefully if it arrives in time I can complete the bottom end next weekend. I've got to go to the stealers again to pick up the bolts to hold the timing belt tensioner in place as it's mounted differently on the 137 tooth kit.

If your assembly lube is a heavy moly fortified version it should do the job...________________________________________ - Bespoke rollcages/additions/adjustments.
