Well finally got some time to post how the Rallye refurb is going. I've tackled it a bit back to front really starting with a complete respray first then started on the engine bay / rear underside.

When I got the car it was in OK conditionon or so I thought. On closer inspection there had been a number of attempted resprays and it was rather orange peely too so I decided to rub it all down and take it over to my mates garage to give it a better finish (and also one shade of black)
Before:Hoping this works......

All rubbed down:

Right now that I've sussed how to upload the photos I'll carry on....

I'd originally thought about leaving all the panels on but decided for the better to take off as much as I could to ensure I got the best finish I could. I've only ever sprayed motorbikes and minor repairs before so this was a new challenge.

All panels off:

After a bit more rubbing down (I started with 240, then 400, then 600 ready for the barcote) I got the car masked off. I didn't want to cut the cable for the rear wiper so I ended up leaving the tailgate on. After a couple of coats of barcoat I got the following:

The barcoat was rubbed down and then on with the primer:

This was left to harden for a few days whilst I was working. Got the wet n dry out again and got ready for the black. I decided on Peugeot Onyx black so went over to the local paintshop for a few litres. If anyone has painted black before you'll know it goes on like varnish!! It took about 8 liters of paint in the end to get a good thick coat over the whole car.
Part painted:

Rolled out in the sunshine:

Bonnet painted too:

Once all was dry, the fun of putting it all back together without scratching anything. Nearly there:

All panels on apart from the sideskirts:

Then the joys of rubbing it all down with 1500 and 2000 grit paper, compounding, t-cutting, and finally polishing - sure my fingers are shorter now
LOL

It was all worth it in the end:

I just missed out at the time when Rick_Rallye was ordering all the decals so I ended up going the e-bay route. Fortunately I have the better set from Rick waiting to be put on. Thats after part 2 of the refurb.......

I'm a design engineer who spends most of the time on CAD etc. Been doing a bit of spraying for a few years - started on motorbikes and with the help of my mates spray gun and compressor I decided to tackle the Rallye. Thanks for the comments much appreciated Big grin

The Rallye is currently in a load of bits at the moment with all the front end off which is part 2 of the refurb - loads of rust removal been carried out

Unfortunately my mate has sold his house so theres no garage to do the spraying in Sad.

Currently doing the engine bay like Carl and I've had to do that on the drive which meant covering the whole car in plastic. Spray still got under so the car needs another good t-cutting and polishing

Good stuff Thumbs up When you put the new decals on make sure you get the side stripes on properly, they should be a little more level Yes

Oh and the wheels, need something a little more menacing Thumbs up

Thanks for the comments guys Thumbs up
On the wheel front they've got to stay for a bit but I intend to give them a spraying at some point - probably black centres and leave the rim section silver

Onto part 2 of the refurb. About 6weeks ago I started to remove the front end to see how the chassis was standing upto 10 years of work. Looking at the projects on here I started to fear the worst, took a deep breath and got going.

Removing the slam panel became the first issue shearing 2 bottom bolts. Luckily a trip to see Jonnie205 sorted out a replacement.

Weekend 1 - Just started:

Front bits removed:

Disconecting all the cables and pipes were next. Since its going to be a while before it all goes back together I decided to put ID tags on all the connectors - that way I'd remember where they all go.
The power steering pipe that runs underneath the engine will need some new clips since these sheared even after a good soak with release oil. Once all fluids were drained I set about removing the engine. Using a hoist I managed (just) to get the engine and box out over the cross member and onto the floor. Since the front was already on axle stands I didn't want to lift it up so I could drop the engine

Engine out:

Using an old kitchen worktop I dragged the engine into the shed to start removing the loom and any other parts that could be cleaned.
In the shed:

This is where I realised that the oil cooler was knackered. The outlet which connects to the top radiator hose had split so after a trip to Pug to see how much a new one was (

Jeez looks like your car has been dragged from the bottom of the red sea, glad your on the case, from what i can see it will look better than new once you throw the paintgun around it.

Great work, Carl
