Right, thought I'd better show you what went wrong with my engine. As suspected it's spun a bearing. No.2 con-rod bearing as it happens. It had spun it so badly that both bearing shells were overlapping and that was why the engine had virtually siezed solid Shock

Here you can see the damage to the crank journal:

And pieces of bearing material in the oil pickup:

Some very second-hand shells:

More shrapnel in the sump:

The mains appear to have survived, but the crank has some nice deep scores where the con-rod was going metal to metal with no bearing to protect it. Looking at a few of the others it would appear that they were'nt too far behind either. Looking back I don't remember my oil guage ever reading that high before but just after she died she was reading 120 degrees, that is a fair bit too much I think as it's not supposed to get much above 100 ideally. It was'nt that high on previous trackdays (in hotter conditions too) and it was around 110 the previous lap, I'm wondering if I just over loaded the oil and ran out of film strength?

That's what I like to call 'racing clearance'.

Less friction with an air gap, you go faster Wink

My oil temp sensor showed 130*c after about 8 mins at Rockingham at FCS so i fitted a 16 row oil cooler and added fresh oil as soon as i got home, then i saw 115*c on each lap around the nordschleife a few weeks later. Each time i was using the Total Q7000 stuff recommended by Peugeot.
Mine is still running sweet as a nut though (touch wood LOL )

I wouldnt like to say, but i always let my oil get to temperature before the rev needle gets anywhere above 3,500rpm, then its party time Devil

I used that oil and my engine was perfectwhen it came apart, might be that there was fuel in the oil or that the oil just cant take track days.
Was lovely stripping it all got to love burnt oil

120 deg oil wouldn't be the cause I dont think. On track they all get that hot or hotter as standard.

120 degrees should be fine on a track day, combe seems to get the oil temp up more than colerne, I was seeing 120 degrees at rs day round combe in the 205,it was a hot day though, at colerne I was only seeing 100 degrees.

Ive got an oil cooler fitted btw.

could be the oil, thats what rich thinks went wrong with mine, as was running cheapish oil, running some red stuff, looks more like atf, silkolene pro race 15-50, hope it holds out longer, im out the dead rallye club, but will probly be back soon enough lol!!

Still need to strip down my engine, see what was wrong with it, it was rattling like f*ck, but was still running just severe lack of power!!

I reckon it's an oil film strength issue Yes

Given the state of tune of your engine Jim, I would be using a proper motorsport oil.

And to clarify, the OEM filters don't have a non return valve - what they have is a bypass valve. When pressure builds up in the filter at high RPM, the valve opens, and lets oil pass straight through the filter without going through the filtration medium.

This is handy and a good safeguard, as if you have a blocked oil filter, it won't effect the oil pressure the engine receives and has no-doubt saved many engines.

Smile

Can't go wrong with some Silkolene fully-synth for the money, probably the Pro-S 10w-50 if the oil is getting that hot.

Failing that I think Opie has the Redline oils on offer at the minute? Unsure
They make stonking oils for dampers so I'd imagine the engine stuff is much the same.

Yeah, Redline oils are very good, I think there more expensive than Silkolene though?! Unsure

I've used Silkolene Pro-S on a mildly tuned engine, but not on anything extreme - it could be worth ago.

The thing to remember Jim - even expensive oil is MUCH cheaper than new engines Laugh
