After a previous thread asking how to remove any excess metal from the interior I was told to buy a spot weld drill remover, so I did.

This weekend I removed the brackets pictured below

My wife then removed all the sound deadening from the passenger front and rear foot wells which the pics below show the result

Here is a few pics of what happend after I removed the excess metal

The spot weld drill does make some mess if you aint carefull, which I had to repair. In the week I will body fill the imperfections.

Below are some more pics of progress

This weekend I did the following:-

Angle grinded some more joins on the roll cage

The passenger front and rear footwells were scotch'd

Sound deadening was removed from Drivers front and rear footwells (got cooked by the heat gun LOL)

I have decided not to use my car this week as you can see by the picture below I have removed quite a lot so it would make work easier.

Next week I shall be ordering another Cobra Seat Mount and a Oil Breather Filter as I seem to be having a bit of splutter from Cold.

Next weeks tasks are to start Body filling any imperfection in the interior, remove any residue from the sound deadening. Remove scuttle panel and remove dashboard so I can investigate why heater has gone up the duffHuh?

Nice work. Doing the same to mine ATM! Only difference being that we've removed the dash. Would be interested in seeing this go round a track when you've finished it.

Just a quick update, this weekend I removed the left over sound deadening from foot wells, then keyed the whole area.

I have filled all the holes with Metal Superweld and bodyfiller, several coats of bodyfiller will be required, but should be completed by this weekend.

New seat supports have been fabricated this week.

I will be placing an order with Demon Tweeks this week for my passenger seat brackets & Oil crank filter.

Pics will be loaded later this week....Happy

This week I have been covered in Bodyfiller dust all week, its harder than it looks I either put too much filler on or rub too much off, but slowly I am getting there.Cool

Below are some pics of the work I have done.

The image on the left shows the repair after removing the temporary seat support brackets, after angle grinding off, the whole area had to be skimmed Shock

The picture below shows the new seat support and the old seat support, they have been sanded then red oxided at the moment but will be going the same colour as the interior

This weeks task.... More rubbing down and filling.Blink

Just won me a non-aircon complete heater from a GTi6 from off ebay, so as soon as the dash comes out it will be fitted and hopefully I will have some heat.

have you welded that cage straight to the floor?
when i had my rally car built i had to have a box/platform spot welded to the floor first for the cage to sit on and then be welded or bolted to that. other wise should you roll, the cage leg will go straight through the floor as you have infact weakened the floor by welding to it. It would also fail a scrutineering check if it were used for motor sport. these platforms also enable the cage to sit tight to the car roof and stop you clouting your head on the cage everytime you get in/out the car

As GKZ206 said its welded onto of pre-fabricated plates that were welded in when the Roll Cage was installed.

This weekend I have had all of the welded joints re-welded as GKZ206 was unsure if his welder was powerful enough to give enough penetration to make a strong joint so my Father-in-law who is a professional welder when over the joints.

The welder that we used was a Phase 3 Arc welder and was too strong even turned down and he blew a couple of holes in the body which he had to weld up. If we'd had a Mig Welder it would have been easier.

This week I shall be removing the Dash and fixing the heater problem hopefully.

difficult to describe in words but the ruling at the time of my cage being fitted was a purpose made box had to be spot welded to the floor in 5/6 mm steel and then the cage foot was bolted to the platform thus spreading the load.welding straight to the floor will weaken the thing and you have made a perforation shape for the cage to punch its way through when under load.

Interesting that Sid Yes

The plates supplied with the cages should spread the load better i would have thought Unsure

The platform would put all the load on the contact points with the floorpan which are limited in comparison to the plate method Unsure

I may be talking crap, just what first popped into my head Laugh

i have been looking for the rac regs of the years i was competing.but to no avail. when you weld that foot plate to the floor you weaken the floor pan. These regs were 15 years ago mind but the cars i saw at the rallycar show this year still used this method. the box is not seam welded ,only spot welded to hold it in place . I have only seen one fitment on this cage in the thread that looks welded to the floor and that was in the rear.

the main hoop on Daves car has got a box section welded under it as you say but the front and rear sections just have 3-4mm thick steel plates under them, which where welded to the floor first then the cage welded on top. This is not a full on racing cage its just a clubman cage supplied by Custom Cages. I just fitted as per their instructions and with the parts they supplied.
