The time has come for another discussion about the future of the club. Membership numbers are dropping and hosting costs are rising, so I gave it some thought over Christmas and have decided to move on.

If anyone is keen to make an offer, I'll sell the company, website domains, hosting etc. If not, I think it's time to close down the website. It's been quite a ride, but after 16 years almost everyone is either on PSOOC or Facebook anyway or has lost interest.

I'm immensely grateful to Stan, Rich, Lee and all the other admins for keeping the place under control. I'm sure they won't mind being relieved of duty Laugh

The GTi-6 and Rallye cars were truly special and we won't see cars like them again. From https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk it looks like there are 110 Rallyes and about 400 GTi-6 left, so the chances of any new members coming to the club is pretty minimal now.

Sad times, but I think it's time. Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers
Ash

It'll be a sad day if this place is lost forever. Cry

Sad times if this is to happen, what's the chances of a few of the surviving members cubbing together to keep it going perhaps?

I think it should be saved if possible.

Absolute gold mine of info.

Would it not be better to set a date. Say a year from now?

Sad times indeed,..

I've been here since 2005 I've met some great members and now friends,..
Most of my knowledge about 6/Rallyes came from this site and its sad to see it coming to an end but its day was always going to come,..
If we could back up the forum as a read only archive that would be great but I'm guessing due to the size that this would end up costing? £££
if not then we should at least back up the FAQ section on a blog etc?

What are the costs of keeping it running as it is compared to having it read only?

I hoped this was an old thread revival but it is a new post indeed.

That would be absoultely sad if the site went offline. So much info accumulated over time, it would be a great loss. It's still a great meeting place and vital for exchange of information, not comparable to Facebook (which is a complete mess imo). I also think that with the cars becoming rarer, the number of enthusiasts won't decrease. Some will leave, others will come looking for a place with like-minded people to communicate with, restoring the 6's they salvaged from abuse, and again others will come back missing their life in a 6. Wink

The 6 is becoming a classic car. Don't let the club die before. I can fully understand your position, Ash, and I appreciate your communication. Some years ago the laguna2.de forum with all its information suddenly disappeared without a notice. If it's your final decision, please let us know the options to keep it up.

Thanks,
Michael

I’m sorry to see this happening, I’m a new member and in Australia these cars are so rare there’s no way I could have gained the info that has helped me save a Gti from the wreckers.
I understand your decision but it would be a real shame to see this website close.

damn, theres so much good info on here it really would be a tragic loss to see it all go.

would you mind being a bit more transparent about the site in terms of cost to run?
how much bandwith is used a month, how much storage does the site use?

Cheers,
Alex

I found the site when my cambelt snapped around 2003-2004 and used the info to do the head swap myself. Since then, I've logged in regularly, recently once a day.

What does it cost to run, how many paying members are there, and do you get any income from ads?

If there is no chance of keeping the forum active, can you get archive.org to get a full copy?

All very valid points, and it’s good to know that the information on here is still worth keeping. I agree that keeping at least some parts of it available would be best, so what are people’s thoughts on removing all the non-essential forums and keeping the rest as a read-only archive?

Mind you, if we’re doing that, we might as well keep the rest Hmm

Financially, our current hosting is something like £55 a month, with membership covering about £20 or £30 of that. It doesn’t sound much, but for me, it’s £300 a year that I’d rather use elsewhere. If we stripped the website down a bit (removed gallery, for sale, maybe some of the forums) we could drop down to a cheaper (slower) hosting package and reduce costs that way.

If you were to remove sections in a bid to decrease costs, I'd recommend axing the following as no one uses them:
Comedy Central
Off Topic
I Spy
I.C.E.
Security
Insurance
The Parts Bin
and perhaps What's It Worth?

This would leave the core subjects that everyone finds useful. I for one am in the middle of an extensive restoration of my Rallye and I'd be kinda lost without some of the info that's contained within these main sections. I've felt for years now that the sections I've mentioned above were a bit of a waste of time and few people have added to them, so I'd not miss them if they were scrapped.

I joined here after the CXOC forum suddenly vanished - that was another great forum with lots of banter and lots of knowledgeable folk.. Having owned both VTS's and GTI-6's these forums have been a wealth of knowledge, but I fully understand the decision to shut up shop if it comes to it.
Perhaps I'll have to join Facebook if that's where it's all at now?
