Right, since giving the engine a light jet wash it appears to have developed a major misfire that won't clear. It sometimes don't idle well, sometimes cuts out, sometimes it back fires, it nearly always misses from low revs. But at high revs it seems perfect and pulls very well. The ecu is reading no faults and all the sensors it can check are okay. Now, we've changed a lot of stuff, crank sensor, cam sensor, lamda, ICV, coils, multi function relay and much much more. The connections have all been checked and yet it still does it so we're coming to a blank. Any ideas people? We're thinking of changing the ECU and engine loom now, after we try new plugs (the old ones are not very old), fuel rail and regulator and injectors and it pretty much always get shell fuel and got 1/2 a tank of V POWER last night.

just go straight for plugs, not likely to be ecu or loom.

Burn it!!

Also before anyone says I've also cleaned up both earth's to the gearbox, cleaned up both the earth points to the inner wing in front of the battery, added a decent thick earth strap between the head and the body to be 100% as everything is 17 years old.

Also removed and cleaned / inspected both the engine loom plugs below the airbox on the inner wing.

Car cuts out sometimes instantly and other times randomly then runs perfect for a good while. Gave symptoms of crank sensor so replaced it with a brand new one, brand new icv (proper MM one) brand new lambda sensor, swapped all 4 could of another RS engine, green coolant sensor reads perfect opportunity pug planet, no fault codes, live data looks spot on for everything, swapped with a known good TPS and IAT sensor swapped known good map sensor, also checked the loom connection to the alternator, replaced the multifunction relay with brand new one....

Also has new inlet gasket and throttle body gasket, squirted brake cleaner all around the inlet and throttle body to check for air leaks and seems perfect. Removed plugs and checked which aren't very old I've probably tried more things just can't remember them all....

Compression test was all 4 between 205 and 220 psi.

Normally have bkr6ek on the shelf WP so would have done but their not very old and it's very intermittent.... will get some when I'm. Back to work Tuesday. I drove it for about 20 miles fault free Tuesday night then Wednesday evening it came back nearly as bad as ever. Aaron couldn't even get it started for more than a few seconds at one point then it cleared again....

It shows no fault codes even when missing or spluttering but the ignition advance seems to jump up to near 40 degrees at some points then comes right back down again.

You'd think so wouldn't you... no moisture in any loom plugs or sensors anywhere all checked and cleaned. Removed the ecu and found a fair few of the pins covered in an oily residue so washed off the loom plug and ecu with electrical contact cleaner. Still the same. Can't find anything water related that would cause an issue.

Pete did a great job. Having ac back is nice. We simply repaired the leaky pipes and pete had to fit a new pump as mine had developed a leak through the casing.

Now, if only we can fix this driving issue as it almost impossible to drive in traffic.

Any ideas anyone?

We are looking to try pete's Knock sensor from his car, change the plugs, change the fuel rail, injectors and pressure regulator. After that I have no idea. I need it fixed as it's my daily and I can't trust it at tye moment.

Have you tried a second ECU yet to eliminate it as the problem? Unsure

Not yet. I believe we will trying pete's rallye one in it. But it's a bit of a pain as we gotta change some other bits or something as it is a locked one.

Ok, well that is definitely the next step to try.

Once that's eliminated, we can look at further avenues.

We had a lot of spares to hand so tried those as they are free. Only thing I've bought so far was a lamda and crank sensor. We didn't think to try the plugs really as they are less than a year old.

I just aquired a soft unlocked ECU to borrow and try and a different fuel rail with regulator and I have another set of injectors in the shed. I also now have a different knock sensor to try. But we will do the plugs too. What other stuff do people recommend that isn't on this list of bits or the bits in the top 2 posts?

I had a issue like this on my xsi after a head gasket replaced it turned out to be a sensor which caused the car to over fuel coking up the spark plugs
