My 306 has been off the road for about a year, starting it regularly to keep the battery working and air-con lubricated.

I've just had it MOTd, needing 2 new front springs, bottom ball joints, rear brake pipes and a steering ram.

I drove to work on Wednesday and all was fine. Going home, I was sat in a lot of traffic for 3/4 of an hour and the clutch started to drag. Eventually, I couldn't change gear and popped off the gear linkage trying.

The engine was too hot to pop it back on so called the AA expecting to be towed home. He popped it back on as it was now 1 1/2 hours later and he test drove it on a car park. I drove the 30 miles home with him following me and it was fine.

I took it back to the garage yesterday and the clutch cross shaft was very squeaky so lubricated it and is now quieter.

Do you think that having the car standing so long has ruined the clutch so needs replacement?

Maybe.... Or the auto adjuster in the cable is failing? Just a thought....

I'm with lee on this one, had a couple go on me now. One I could feel getting worse and worse until eventually I couldn't select any gear.

Best to replace the cable first anyway it pretty easy mine was randomly dragging after a clutch replacement changed it and now its really smooth was the washers around the pedal end of the cable had rusted that and it hadnt been fitted properly the rubber was bent out of shape 20 dura cable and half hour fitting on the drive Smile

I had very similar a few years ago. Mine was the clutch it's self. It was fine when cold but it wouldnt go into gear once warm. It was a warped friction plate. Changed the clutch and the cable and it was perfect after.

Thanks for all the advice.

I'll try the cable first and see how it goes.
