Firstly i have to say this site has been great as a lurker for information in terms of information pre, buying my car. And i apologise in advance for asking any questions that have been asked a zillion times (i do know where the search is and promise to use it!)

Background:

Ian from Glasgow. Turned 40 a few weeks ago and decided that aside from the 2 cars i have now, i needed a 3rd!

I am blaming 40 but i've spent 3 months trying to convince the other half to get rid of her 1.2 59 plate Polo for a new Fiesta ST. That way she can use my X5 (my other car is the fast datsun) when i fancy a hoon to work in the ST. But she's not having any of it. Too much money - which is true.

So i then sold her the idea of her getting rid of her car and that i buy a £500 car (she is going back to uni and has no need for a car apparently but that means she will end up in the X5 all the time) , that I can spend time re-learning the skills i had from my Mk1/2 Fiesta days about 22 years ago (haven't done brakes/oil change/springs etc since then!). And also i would like to do my Cat B racing licence thing (just for something to do) and go up to Knockhill half a dozen times a year in it.

So with her permission, i went through the usual cars eg MX5, Fiesta ST etc even started looking at Porsche 968's and E30 325i's (i have one when i was 20 - brilliant machine, crashed it and then ended up driving the same Clio for 9 years). But the cost started creeping up and so i stuck to looking at cheaper cars and then came across the suggestion of a 306 Gti-6. Anyone my age will remember the ZX Volcane, Renault 19 16v and all those cars from that era but the 306 stood out for me then (probably because of the 6 speed gearbox) and did again now. Some were saying the 205 but the 306 for me was something a bit more special. So i spent a week or so looking and was tempted with some stripped out cars (probably owned by members here) but i need a road legal car to use - even just to get to Knockhill and hopefully back! Made a few offers (probably very cheeky) and then came across one with <40,000 miles on Autotrader for double my budget!

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201408016263646

I used the buying guide to go through all the checks and apparently everything is good apart from the paintwork! Then i hummed and hawwed about it as it wasn't the £500 car with lots of work i had planned on buying. There is/was a car in edinburgh on gumtree that i would have probably taken over this but the seller never got back to me. So without seeing the car (although the seller has offered money back if i'm not happy) i've done the deal. Crazy but life's too short (especially when you're from Glasgow!) And to be fair the seller was very helpful in terms of all the questions etc.

So the dealer is doing the cambelt, water pump, service and MOT for me before i pick up in a couple of weeks time and then the question is what do i do to it after getting it.

I think i will buy a DA and have a go at the paint before taking it a body shop. YouTube how to videos are bad!

Then i'm not sure what to do. I know with previous cars i have had there's almost a list of things that you must do eg Blacklines on the e91s. So i guess i will have to work out what they are. Although suggestions welcome.

Anyway, blabbed on long enough. Can't wait to get the car.

Will post more once i get it.

Welcome Wave
Regarding the paintwork, you won't polish out that lacquer peel.

Big welcome from me. I'm 37 (next week) and remember all those cars you mentioned. I don't have a 6 anymore but I did have one identical to the one you're looking at, you will certainly enjoy it.

Thanks guys. Oh and I forgot tarmac terror who has a great thread about his rallye.

As for paint, yeah I'm clear on it needing professional attention. But watching videos like this makes me want to have a go How to fix peeling Clear Coat on a vehicle: http://youtu.be/FgMr6zsPI6k

I know in reality I'll get the car and just enjoy driving and modding it. And the paint will remain as is Smile

That's too nice a car to track!

Not to put a downer but you could get a car that has some track mods (new shocks, better brakes etc) for that money.

You'll only end up spending the money yourself! It's inevitable

    Yeah you're right.

But part of the idea is doing the car myself as much as i can. The difference being it will be a nice car to drive around in (i hope) in the meantime. It's like playing golf. Costs a lot of money, lots of frustration but when i get it right it will be worth it.

Changing shocks/springs, brakes, strut brace and i guess bushes are all very easy to most but i haven't done for 20 odd years. I'm also keen on learning to refurb alloys and a bit of detailing. So will be great car to practise all that stuff on. Oh and of course a nice set of alloys. Probably Oz Superleggera's (had 18s on my S3).

Otherwise i'd have bought that white one on here that sold for £3600! And then the budget goes up and i'd start looking at 968 sports and i'm back buying a ready made track car or a car i would have serviced for me rather than doing myself!

    Welcome Ian.....
We were discussing this over on GTROC and I'm glad to see that you've signed up and joined.

Funnily enough, my other other car is an X5 (NOT Diesel LOLSmile too. Seems to be a coomon theme here. It was actually the reason I bought the 306!. Having been driving the X5 as a daily runner for a couple of years I needed some motoring fun back in my life seeing as the GTR will probably be another year in mothballs.
I had it in my head that I wanted either a new Fiesta ST or Abarth 595 Competizione as a 4th car(!) but ended up buying a 15yr old 306 instead LOL:. Having gotten the thing back on the road I'd forgotten just how good these cars are.

Sounds like you will be doing the same things that I have done to mine. After shelling out silly money for GTR parts, 306 bits are laughably cheap to the point where its easy to go OTT. I'm sure that you will find the car oodles of fun and look forward to seeing your progress on here soon.

Welcome and great choice of car!

I took mine for a blat around some Monmouthshire B roads last night, with a mate in his 180brake 500 Arbarth - he was only just pulling away on the straights and my stainless exhaust sounded MILES better than his fluffy fart sounds!

    Have fun!

Once you factor in tyres and brakes on a GTR- You could buy a 306Gti-6 every other time (almost!)

I am no track expert so a GTR is far too much car to learn in. Part of the reason i want to learn is that the GTR is so damn capable i feel like i'm not even using 20% of it's abilities most of the time. Eg I've did Day 1 with Colin Hoad at CATDT at Milbrook one to one and it was brilliant and if i lived closer i would have done all 5 days and some other stuff.

Thanks for giving me the heads up to sign up here.

Funny you mention the ST Smile And even the Abarth. Both cars i've looked at. (there must be quite a few people like us! Or least two!) And as you say driving the X5 is so effortless that is part of the reason for getting a 6. The other is learning some track-craft and how to drive fast so i can get more out of the GTR (i realise they are very different cars but it's starting point)

And there is no way i have anywhere near your skillset for modding cars. I wish i had, but i dont'. Maybe if i ever get to ECU programming! (I'm a IT person in a past life and still a bit of a techy geek) Actuall it's quite bad, i just realised I don't even own overalls (am i allowed to start a 'Recommend me a set of overalls' thread!! Smile ) Maybe i should go back to my dad's and nick all his gear eg Spring clamps etc. It will all be there in his garage. He used to buy and sell cars when i was very young. Some very cool cars too Eg Mk1 Escorts, Beatles, Citreon DS's, Capris. etc. My job was to help bleed the brakes. I used to hate it at the time, but how i would love to do that kinda thing with him again. I asked him and he said he felt too old. Which is kinda sad considering how may cars he took to pieces and put back again without a manual. I think we even have engine lifter somewhere!

    Anyway rambling again! Smile

Cheers I'm blessed with living near the beginning of the A82 which lead on to the A85 etc. So looking forward to it.

I used to be able to do the road to Aberfolye from Bishopbriggs in my head. And my old 1.1 Fiesta would leave many a car in it's wake because i knew the corners and bends so well. And then i'd just turn off some random road and see where it took me!! Those were the days. Now i'm lucky if i can remember my way home without the help of sat nav! Smile

Meh.....Everyone knows that Fife has the BEST driving roads in the UK!!!!, LOL:.

All joking aside, the Fife Coast road is just awesome and rates as some of the best roads I've ever driven. Used to terrorise the locals in both my MKII RS2000's back in the day! Shame the GTR won't be a road car as I'd love to take it for a blast there. Still, will be trailering it up to Knockhill as, despite living on the South Coast now, Knockhill's a great circuit and a 'must visit'.

As for overalls, get a basic pair from Screwfix or similar. I used to have decent ones but TBH, they get knackered pretty quickly e.g covered in coppaslip or holed from welding. Toolstation do a decent pair for £12!!! In all seriousness though, get yourself a good pair of protective boots or shoes for doing 'garage stuff'. The amount of times my toes have been saved by wearing 'steelies' is beyond counting....

When do you pick up the '6 again???
