Hi all,
I have a phase 1 gti 6, a lot of work gone into it, had to put another engine, timing belt, water pump, fully serviced the works and for the want of a better word, sounds s**te, bit like a tractor or sumtin even cut out the other day. My wuestion is, my mechanic reckons its the cylinder head, possibly the tappets and will be alot of money, the car is runnin constantly at around 7.5 / 8.0 bar oil pressure, could this cause the engine noise and the car to cut out,

Pressure should be about 80ish psi at cold idle dropping to 30-35psi hot idle and it should make 60psi at 4k.

Can you get a video?
Mine tapped its tits off until i warmed it up properly and then the tappets filled with oil and it was fine.

Was the engine sourced from a good reliable source ? Who did the cam belt change ? Did you use a good bottom pulley that has not slipped to time up the engine ?

Living in ireland and there wasn't an engine to be found, got it from england on ebay, sounded fine at first but gradually got worse, my mechanic is a1 and I would trust him to get quality parts, but then again I know feck all bout cars, so guess it comes down to trust in the end

It's an easy mistake to make - ask him if he checked the bottom pulley and cams all lined up before the cam belt change ?

She's constantly up around 8.0 bar no matter how warm she gets, and sounds awful the whole time.

    Easiest thing with videos is to put them on youtube or photobucket then post a link on here.

    8 Bar is a lot of oil pressure..... And it Definately should drop once warmed up....

    To add insult to injury, the car cut out again, barely got up to temperature and just gave up.

    Sounds like a tapper to me ? Or it's not bee timed correctly due to a slipped pulley

    Sounds f**ked that's for sure.

    Sounds like bent valves but then when he rev's it, instead of increasing the tapping it kind of goes silent? Which is a bit odd.

    Exactly what i thought. The initial tapping just sounds like very noisy injectors or a bad tappet or two but there is also a more dull tapping which sounds like a big end to me!

    Where did you get it from ? I'd get the timing checked with a good pulley first but chances are its a bad engine ?

    Could also whip the sump off and get the bearings checked ?

    Only place could find one was on ebay, took a chance. May just see what the verdict is when my mechanic has a look.

    I'd talk to the seller explain you had it installed by a proper mechanic - maybe get a proper written report and see if you can get your money back ? If you paid through eBay you can start a case against the seller as the item was not sold as described ? That is if it was described as fully working ?

    This. Normally id just say that whoever has done the belt has cocked it up hence the tapping but its not quite a belt tap and even that wouldn't explain your high oil pressure.
    Are you sure the pressure gauge is wired in correctly? Pretty sure most top out at about 8 bar so are you sure its not just maxed out due to a wiring problem?
