bad charged battery or rough treatment would give off the nasty stuff!
Sulfuric acid vapours are extremely irritating to skin and you dont want to be breathing these fumes it affects the nervous system, respiratory tract, lungs, and impair the cardiovascular system. These effects are from inhalation only
my advice is if you want to relocat the battery! put battery in a sealed container and vent it to outside the car
