Hi I was planning on moving my battery to the boot. I'm not sure on the best way of doing this
1. I was going to use the standard battery in a box
2. I was going to extent both positive and negative cables to the boot rather than use the body to pick up the negative
3 do i need a cut off switch this could this go under the bonnet

Any help much appreciated i see a few of you have done this Thumbs up

Standard battery is fine. Dont run the earth back to the front. Find somewhere in the back to earth the battery. Your better off having a short earth. No need for a cut off switch, there only really used in motorsport. You can get a junction box to join the live wires under the bonnet.

I've moved mine to behind the passenger seat in the race car. I wired mine in to the original battery connections so ran a positive from the battery through a cut-off switch then into the original loom. I also ran the negative back to the original earth point.

You could use the standard battery but make sure you have something strong enough to secure it.

You don't need a cut-off switch if you don't want one.

Ok we used to do this on the stock cars and used a red battery box i think it was made of fibre glass , I can't find them anymore , is there a reason why these aren't used anymore ?

Usually pick them up on ebay, if not rallydesign do them if I remember right

Personally I wouldn't be using a standard battery inside the car.....

What cable size do i need, will it be fine run under the carpet down passenger sill or down the exhaust tunnel inside , under the carpet ?

Ok Jeffers any reason for this , if i looked at one of those race battery's any recommendations it's still a road car I'm just trying to make room under the bonnet

As long as battery is secure it will be fine. Not sure on how well a race battery would cope with every day use and having all electrics running, lights, radio, windows ect...
Battery cable will be fine ran under the carpet. Use the search bar, I had a thread up a while back when I was making the relocation kits. Plenty info on their about cable size ect...

Cool just read it am i right in saying i could just run a short bit to the floor say with a welded captive nut , and then a long 1 to the front to a joint box picking up all the lives , and extent all the grounds in the engine bay to the body i take it thats what the short bits are for ?

Well the fumes given off when charging a lead acid battery are not exactly good for you to start with.....

Ok Jeffers point taken , do you have any recommendations i dont think a race battery will be up to the job of running the electrics in a road car ?

It's been awhile since I've done this stuff can you still get those yellow top battery's that looked like they were made of tubes i can't remember what they were had one in the mini , they weren't meant to discharge if i remember correctly are those better Jeffers ?

Get a leasure battery as used in caravans etc. Also whilst your searching for cable, look for cable thats used for mig/arc welders, it seems to be cheaper than auto stuff although its the exact same, or get yourself to a breakers yard and hunt out a BMW, they have boot mounted batteries so you will get all the cable you need for a fiver, thats what i did

Leisure battery have dry cells (or some of them do) plus they generally have a high Ah (amp hour) rating, this probably wont benefit you much but if your bothered about fumes and acid inside the car then a dry cell would be ideal. A mate of mine has a race battery in his honda integra DC5 and has no issued with it running all of the cars electrics, it is very small in size approx 20x10x10. Google them to see what suits you and your budget

I had a optima battery in the boot but it weighed 28kg I think was awesome though car fired up like very quick and even after long durations of non starting it still fired up as they hold there charge!

Went for a bosch s5 I think it was at 12kg and its a sealed battery so no fumes.
I also go a leisure battery box with has vents. Aux points for jump leads with an on and off button, cigar lighter point and also a push button battery tester! Was about £40 but well worth it!

^ Optima, thats the one i was on about, you can get them in different sizes, 28kg's a heavy bit of ballast to be lugging about lol

Yep hence my change to something a little lighter! All the batterys I was looking at for lightness but with still enough power to run everything were mega money ie over £400 as they were lithium batterys

You can get them proper cheap on ebay and I wouldnt worry about buying one second hand as these things last a very long time!!!! Long as it aint to old lol

The Fumes given off by a properly charging lead acid battery be it dry cell or wet is Hydrogen which is HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE and oxygen which excellerates the burn

althought the these fumes wont harm you the explosion might ring your ears a little and i think earplugs wont help Wink

a bad charged battery or rough treatment would give off the nasty stuff!
Sulfuric acid vapours are extremely irritating to skin and you dont want to be breathing these fumes it affects the nervous system, respiratory tract, lungs, and impair the cardiovascular system. These effects are from inhalation only

my advice is if you want to relocat the battery! put battery in a sealed container and vent it to outside the car
