Right, so here goes

I am the recent new owner of a black 306 with a GTi6 engine and box – this much is certain! I bought the car about 2 months ago as a daily so I could do some proper work on my 205, and in true French car style the 306 has been a bundle of trouble since then and I’ve not even started on the poor old 205.

Anyway, it was advertised as a 306 Rallye. I must admit I did limited research beforehand so didn’t really know what I was looking at when I viewed the car, and I was in a rush to get something else so I didn’t have to re-MOT the 205.

All I really knew was what a ‘6 engine looked like – yep, it’s got one of those – and it should have a fabric interior – check, right that’ll do. (And at this point also worth pointing out I didn’t buy it because it was a Rallye – I didn’t care about this at all. I was just looking for a 306 Gti so l won’t be feeling bad either way!)

Since then I have had a few conversations with people, who have at times, become almost paralysed with confusion and bewilderment while looking at the car. ‘It’s definitely not a Rallye because a, b, c thru to z isn’t right… got to be a 6... But then again it hasn’t got x or y… maybe it’s a re-shell…’ and so on.

Now all this speculation has got me intrigued too, so I need to find out soon so I can start sleeping again at night!

Here’s what I’ve heard so far;

Says it’s NOT a Rallye;
· No stickers (anywhere!)
· Front Fogs/Spotlights
· Crystal headlights
· Aircon
· Electric Windows
· Passenger airbag
· Wrong interior fabric and split rear seats instead of single bench

Says it IS a Rallye;
· V5 says ‘306 16v Rallye’
· Tin top
· Manual door mirrors
· No alarm
· Rubber steering wheel
· It’s got ‘306 Rallye’ badged floor mats! (Must be then? Surely?)

I’ve checked that the VIN on car matches DVLA/VOSA registration/MOT certificate, so it should be this shell that is on the log book.

I’ve also looked up the VIN on Peugeot Servicebox and have the printout of the car details, which gets a bit more interesting. On the print it specifies the Aircon, electric windows, crystal headlights, front fogs, and a rubber steering wheel, so far so good.

It also specifies the trim level as ‘SPORT 2 RALLY’ – but does this mean it’s a Rallye or it is just a trim package available for the 6?

The interior is spec’d as a ‘Merlin cloth “HH” ‘ Common consensus so far is that the interior isn’t right, but I can’t seem to get any info online on what this interior code means.

What I’d be really interested to do would be compare the VIN of a ‘genuine’ Rallye on servicebox to the printout I get and see what the differences are. And also maybe that of a proper 6 and compare against that too.

If the logbook says its a rallye then I would take it its a rallye. Check chassis numbers on the car with the log book. Iirc there were a couple demo rallyes fitted with electric windows bet then for it to have air con and fogs, seems strange?

those seats are whats fitted to PH3 HDI D turbo's and also PH3 1.8 XS. Probably not much help!

As Eddy pointed out, it is what it says on the logbook, if all VIN numbers check out then it must be genuine. I guess someone along the line may have added the extras, ie, electrics pack

You could have a Rallye with full electrics, it was special order iirc. The one that Ross bought off Kev jones had a full electric pack too. So although rare it's not unheard of!

There are rallyes with all the electric trimming. I remember 1 was a company car for a pug manager and had all extra options fitted. Id say its a rallye as its on the logbook.

It's 2014 time to discuss this car again....

It's a rallye it was a employees car at pug who spec'd it up with Merlin cloth, fogs and aircon etc.

It's the proverbial bad penny/butter ball that comes bouncing back for more etc.

Puff your chest up and tell your mates that you've got the f**king B all and End all of Rallye's FACT.

Important digits.

Thanks for the responses guys!

At least it's a genuine car then, even if it is a little pointless to put all the extras back onto a 'leightweight' model.

Wonder why the original owner would have made it look like a HDi with the interior and no badges? Maybe trying to have a 'sleeper Rallye'!?

Anyway if in the future I sell it to someone who's not on here I'll give them all the printouts plus a copy of this thread so they don't have to make another new version of this topic!

Who in their right mind would spec it up with Merlin cloth?! Crazy LOL

Looking at the serious lack of wear on the drivers bolster im gonna say it's either been in storage since the beginning of time or those seats have been swapped in for the tatty Rallye ones... Dunno

It's only done 88k so it might be possible they have been looked after. The Merlin cloth does mean that particular pattern right - the Rallye ones are Phoenix cloth? So the seats are the right pattern even if they came out of a different car at some point?

Actually that cloth wears very well so it's probably the original. Is identical to what was in my Astor hdi originally and had done 120k still looked mint but the lumbar support died making the drivers seat very in back friendly so swapped it for an early high bolstered leather interior from a 6.

Iirc it's the same cloth I've seen in other spec'd up demo rallyes.

The servicebox record for my Rallye states Sport 2 Rally and Phoenix cloth, and never seen another GTI6 with that interior so I agree with others on here - could indeed be some weird special order spec.

I googled that and saw the sold ad on car and classic, that car is actually pretty cool, so not pointless - but I'd have to concede more unique. However my tenure is based on a 'uniquely pointless' criteria so I'm clinging on to power. Maybe if the 4dr Rallye owner shows up we'd have a challenge - then likely have to battle, with wooden kitchen implements, to the death... or to whoever got tired first, either one.

I guess I should get back to fixing the bas**rd anyway... anyone know if repair looms for the drivers door are available and if so, where from?

Pretty sure pug still do them but all the wires are black so you have to solder them by numbers individually.... Personally I'd take the door off and cut yours open and solder the broken wires back together.

Yeah I've had a black wired one out of a scrap car before for the girlfriend's 106. I did think about soldering my current one but I've been thinking if I soldered the wires out of the back of the connector it would make the loom less flexible and more prone to snapping wires either side of the join. I'll see how much pug want anyway..

Found the pug part number from the FAQ stickies, looks like the retail price inc VAT is over £115 nowadays, mega sting. I'll see if my stealer can do anything on that, otherwise it might have to be a mega bodge!
