Ah another nightcrawler!

I know how loud that is by the way, the old backbox (the one you bought it with) fell off in the town centre once, Jesus! No

The new one looks much better and professional, unlike that dubious looking powerflow box LOL

I've been running a full standard exhaust with no holes in since christmas that I got off of my dead ph.2.
I absolutely hated that powerflow backbox but I think another reason why it sounded bad was the centre-section had about 8 holes in it!

You're right, it didn't look great either... Laugh my ass off

Yeah that exhaust (Inc centre section) was fairly old. Was also on my black six in the "combe incident" LOL

It is currently in the shed. Big grin

Maybe that's where it got all the holes!

Spent some time yesterday sealing the exhaust properly (my cat join is getting pretty flaky!) and modifying an exhaust strap from halfords to fit the third mounting for the mongoose backbox as one hangar on it is a bit far away to use a rubber exhaust mount.

Spent a bit of time this morning trying to find my sunroof drain pipe blockage with no luck, so put the car back together, washed it, hoovered the inside and dressed the plastics in there, and used plasticare trim dye to restore the plastic trim on the outside which really was letting the car down. It's made a huge difference and now the plastic looks nearly new.

It's still being let down by the rusty tow hook and rusty number plate bolts, but at least it is nice and shiny!

Wow - nice car!!
To be honest, I didn't like the diablo color at first, but it's really growing on me, especially on a ph1.
The black trim gives some contrast, and makes the color a bit more subtle, which I like.

What is that sound proofing called? I have the same problem with the (very heavy) rubber/insulation disintegrating.
Is the exhaust a mongoose? Is it heavier than the original, and how do you find the sound?
I really like the look of it, and the size is perfect, I think!
- and good job polishing!

Those cibie covers are awesome! Proper old school Thumbs up

Thanks!
I really like diablo, I find it looks average in pictures but amazing in the flesh when all polished up in the sunshine, really deep, reflective red.

This is the sound deadening. I am going to put it pretty much everywhere as it is REALLY, REALLY light...and then I've also got some silent coat for problem areas and large panels which can resonate. We did the back half of my friend's clio 182 with just the novostrat and it made a reasonable difference. It's also pretty cheap considering after my boot and his entire rear end there's still probably over half the roll left.

The exhaust is a mongoose yes. It is MUCH lighter than the original, but that's mostly because genuine backboxes are very heavy. The sound is absolutely fantastic, slightly loud on the motorway but not as bad as most other SS exhausts. If you drive it on country lanes etc. and boot it it really does sound amazing. I'm considering switching back to the std. exhaust just to keep this car fully std. and I'll be using it to commute soon so want it quiet....but if I do I'll really miss the excellent sound.

Thanks for the info!

A bit surpriced it is wood floor underlay you are using Big grin
How well does it dampen road noise compared to the original stuff?

Good to know the exhaust is lighter, which is one of the things that would be important to me.
I really don't want it to be too loud either, as mine is a daily too.
Yeah, I bet it sounds awesome Smile

It seemed ideal as it is for deadening the loud sound of laminate floorings, plus it has a waterproof membrane and is thin and light so you can apply a tiny bit in some places and loads in others. Also dead easy to cut with scissors and bend, play with etc.

I only have one layer in the boot but it made a small difference over no deadening, I will be putting a lot more in the car soon though which will certainly make a difference. The front wheel arches and doors transmit a lot of road noise.

Virtually any aftermarket exhaust will be lighter, the standard one is very heavy. However, the standard exhaust is great at deadening the sound so most exhausts are a considerable step up in terms of noise, which is why I looked fairly hard for a mongoose. I think scorpion and jetex exhausts are also not too bad.

I'm debating whether to go completely back to standard induction and exhaust as that has a lovely, subtle tone and this car will be commuted in after summer, so it may be for sale, but on the other hand, I love the bwarps.

Car looks lovely, Diablo is only allowed on a phase 1, fact!!

I am a massive fan of OE where exhausts are concerned, my Rallye came with a Jetex and the intention was to oust it and sell it on but its awesome, love the sound on idle (burbles more than standard) but giving it the beans it's only a touch louder (from inside the car anyway!) so it gets my vote.

Keep up the good work Thumbs up

Thanks! Yeah I really like them as well, got them for fairly cheap and they are made for those lights so fit perfectly.

I like diablo on all phases but it is best on Ph.1. This is my 3rd diablo... Laugh my ass off
Really like astor on ph.2/3s and cossack on ph.1s as well.

I just can't decide what to do exhaust-wise!

I finished my last ever exam today, proud owner of a bachelor's degree...I hope, so more things should be achieved with this car soon.

Congratulations man, well done!

Good to know that the insulation actually works, and is easy to apply. I will give that a go down the road.

Thank you for the kind words. I've got a job starting in September as well so that's me set up quite nicely.

Anyway, mini-update: I spent 10 minutes or so doing things I didn't need any tools for before I head to the pub this afternoon. Removed the manky underbonnet sound-deadening. Then fit a new LHS indicator to match the new RHS one.
Before:

Comparison:

Done:

Made a great difference, now just need to re-chrome the insides of the headlamps and clean the insides out more thoroughly than last time and the headlamps will be looking lovely. Also fit an adjuster to the headlamp that was missing it:

This now means I can use dipped beams without everyone flashing at me because they think I'm using mains. LOL

Does anyone have a link to any long, rubber exhaust hangars? The longest I've found was a 75mm distance between the holes. I need about 110mm or anywhere thereabouts. I'm currently using a strap but it is very stiff and transmitting a lot of vibrations to the cabin.

Spent quite a bit of time sound-deadening the whole rear of the car and the roof today. I also added two more layers to the boot floor.

Stripping:

Weighted the large flat areas of sheet metal in the rear quarters:

Added lots of underlay as a sound barrier and to stop this area from being hollow. Hollow areas are not good. The OEM matting went back on top of this behind the trim so this area is absolutely packed.

Weighted the flat areas of the roof:

Covered the flat areas with underlay, being careful to keep it below the profile of the struts so the sunroof couldn't catch on them:

Added some between the gaps on the rear arches:

Work in progress:

This has made a huge difference. I haven't driven it far home at all, and road noise is particularly bad on the motorway, however the three layers in the boot have damped exhaust noise a lot, and the rear quarters now sound absolutely solid when you tap them, and overall the car doesn't produce as much noise. I think the roof being damped has also helped as it does vibrate a lot over rough roads. Next time you go to your car, tap the rear quarter below the window and listen to how hollow that area is!

I'm going to do the doors and front footwells soon too as this is where A LOT of the road noise seems to come from, especially on the motorway.

I got hold of a standard airbox for cheap on ebay that was in fairly good condition with only small patches of surface rust a few days ago:

However, me being my OCD self this couldn't go on the car in this state so it got wire-wheeled all over to strip the paint and rust and then primered:

Then painted bright red (phone camera in the sun made it look pink somehow):

This will get a bit of lacquer on it in the morning.

I freshened up my standard exhaust with some VHT paint which was a nightmare, can was faulty and spluttered everywhere and kept blocking, hence the relatively poor coverage, however it is still better than before and looks acceptable for now:

I then removed the mongoose and refitted my standard exhaust:

The mongoose is the best-sounding exhaust I have heard for the 306 and when you boot it it is fantastic! It isn't silly loud, however I will be using this car to go to work and have decided to go quieter. I went for a little drive this evening and I miss it already. I can't decide whether to keep it, sell it or swap it for a scorpion/other shinies or what really...

Glad to see I'm not the only person in oxford with a rotting phase 2 diablo on my drive lol

The mongoose isn't chavvy in my opinion, sounds great at all revs just not ideal for something I'm going to commute in eventually. I've heard that scorpions are a bit quieter.
Yeah my K&N is being replaced with std. as it makes the engine sound a lot less refined at lower revs IMO.

lol it'll go eventually

Hey chap. How is that underlay attached? Is it self adhesive or have you had to use spray adhesive/double sided tape?

The underlay isn't self-adhesive, I used proper re-trimming spray glue stuff and it stuck down very, very easily with liberal amounts of that, even up to the roof.
The underlay is very easy to cut with scissors, and to bend and work with generally. It is also very light and relatively inexpensive compared to others.

If you'd like a link for the adhesive then I'll dig it out. I definitely think it works best in conjunction with the silent coat weighting the panels, I'll have silent coat left over after finishing it I think.

No, it is a friend's. I rather like it but lean a little bit in favour of the 306 purely in terms of personal preference, although I haven't actually had the chance to drive it.

Today I finally replaced my clock and made my electric wing mirror adjustment work:

I then sound-deadened my driver's side door and decided I'd rather go and have a subway than do the passenger's side, it also looked like it might rain so that'll be done another day.

    Stripped the door down:

Weighted the outer skin with Silent-coat:

Then I put underlay on the rear of the door card:

I also went over all of the foam seals and sealed them up properly with silver vapour tape, which looked cool and should provide additional protection from water, however I forgot to take a picture.

This little guy also wandered up and seemed very interested in what was going on:
