Two months ago I bought this nice Ph.1 with a shade under 53k on the clock.
Although nice with a lot of potential, it does actually need a fair bit of TLC which I've started to give it, beginning with a wash, dressing all of the plastics and osram nightbreaker plus bulbs. The indicator plastic is missing as it was a bit loose and they are both full of algae so will be getting the other one off to remove it on that side as well.

There are lots of other things that need doing, such as fixing the leaky roof and leaky rear lights. Fortunately I managed to source a pair of mint, barely used rear lights that had been dry stored since the mid 90s for 2.99!

For now, here's some freshly washed photos, someone near Halfords in Leamington Spa gave the car a thumbs up today in case that was anyone on here?

Done absolutely loads to this to get it up to a good standard since the new year, details of which I will maybe share when I have the time, but it now looks like this:



Needs non-rusty numberplate screws...





Also, I'm going to de-rust and paint up a spare heatshield, spare wheel cage and some other assorted bits. Forgot to grab the hanger for the cage though. Doh:

Yesterday I added some sound-proofing to the boot floor:




I then trial-fitted my BMC and decided that it if it went in place of the standard airbox it was too low to join the snorkel, would have worked with a feed through the foglight but I wasn't really sure I wanted to do that.

I went back to running an exposed cone, however my friend and I made a shroud for it out of sheet-alloy that shields it from underneath and the side, and traps air from the snorkel around it, so it shouldn't suck up water and it does have a feed of cold air.

After the pictures were taken I added a couple of foam pads to edges that could have rattled on things or which were anywhere near wires.

Maybe box the whole section and running a air feed to the original snorkel?

It's boxed in reasonably well and I'll still go nowhere near standing water.
May consider doing some more though.

Might have to make a Mk.2 filter shield.

At the moment I've only replaced the OEM stuff with this...which is actually lighter.
The OEM boot sound deadening was falling to bits and had some sort of organic growth on it due to leaking rear lights.

Will be doing the rest of the car as well though, people on other forums have supposedly seen good results and in the Ph.1 the road noise particularly through the doors and front arches is really bad on the motorway.

Yep, autosol and microfibre cloths.
Wire wool was used for particularly stubborn bits but it does also dull the finish so I used that as sparingly as possible...mostly on the tarnished welds.

I can't wait to do the centre-section as well so the whole thing's nice and shiny!

Well, as I've pretty much finished my final thesis bar re-reading and formatting some more, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous outside:



I decided that the best use of my time would be to stay inside polishing the centre-section to match the backbox all morning... Laugh my ass off:

Still a bit of tarnishing on the sleeve that goes over the cat but it was really difficult to get off and I've injured my thumb boxing and it was really starting to hurt after all this. You'll see in the before picture it is pretty much black.

Pretty happy with it though!

Finally got around to fitting my shiny exhaust, plus a couple of other little bits I painted up, which looked very out of place compared to the rest of the underside...it'll all get done this summer I think. Big grin





I also managed to snap a couple of mounting studs for the heatshield. As the backbox hangs pretty low, away from everything it won't be a problem, and I'm aware that lots of others who run stainless zorsts don't run them either.

The tailpipe looked huge off the car but it looks pretty spot-on on the car I think:







No video yet. It's excessively loud because I left my exhaust paste at home and the join at the end of my cat is really flakey with a little hole in it. Will rectify this with gun gum soon!
