Has anyone had a power steering ram rebuilt? Mine has a slight leak, wondering what we do now these parts are NLA.

Any knowledge on whether they can be successfully rebuilt, and if so, who could do/has done it?

try these guys. A friend got one on his BMW done by these guys. Very quick turn around time.

I would recommend getting it done asap. When i bought my car, it was leaking. Within 3 weeks, it had used over 2 litres of fluid and eventually just blew the seal one day dumping almost all of my PAS fluid on the road in a matter of minutes. Not cool!

Only have one left, I gave more for them than service box suggests, would be looking at £200

You sure it's not the pump Marco? The pump is now situated right under the passenger head light on yours, the ram is in the centre of the car by the bulkhead.

I saw that. It is really all about risk. A second hand 13 year old one might start leaking a week after you put it in.

For the PITA and labour involved I'd rather put one in that will last a few years.

I think I'd rather spend on 2nd hand first. Then if it does start leaking, have a chat with the guys that repair them.

I know they're NLA, but I reckon they can be repaired cheaper

I'll see if I've got a spare one somewhere to crack apart and have a look.

You've got too much to be getting on with already! Got that rear suspension sorted yet?

Just so I understand it correctly, the bit that normally fails on the power steering rack , is the ram which is pictured on that ebay link?

Same as other hydraulic cylinders, the seals get contaminated with dirt, in this case cr@p coming off the road as it is quite low down attached to the subframe, and abrasive dirt particles get on the exposed bit of piston and as the cylinder operates the dirt damages the seal which fails and starts leaking. Or seals just give up over time. The piece of bin liner that supposedly protects the ram clearly doesn't work so well in this case. Mine was torn and hanging off doing no protective action of any kind when I got the car, which had just gone through a nice salty gritty Scottish winter. To rebuild the ram, it is stripped down and if the bore and piston are not pitted or otherwise damaged it can usually be rebuilt with new seals, and will then be as good as new. Some hydraulic cylinders cannot be rebuilt successfully for a variety of reasons. I remember getting a rebuilt clutch slave cyl for an old Type 85 Audi years ago when I lived overseas, was only about £35 IIRC.

I'd rather put a rebuilt one in if it is a proven and successful route like the Audi clutch cyl, rather than paying ££over-the-odds for the last new one in captivity or putting a second hand one of similar age/mileage as the one that just failed and having to do it all over again weeks/months later.

Has anyone found anywhere that sells a boot (sort of like a cv boot) that is the correct size to go over the ram? Mine doesnt have a cover at all since the old plastic bag was ripped and useless when i replaced the ram. Dont want to destroy another ram!
