As above?

I have recently bought a 1998 ph2 6 which has done 150k. I bought the car thinking it would be a fun little daily run around and I am really sad to say that it has been massively underwhelming.

So far the crank sensor went which i replaced. Then she sprung a massive leak in the radiator so i replaced that. I also swapped the air filter for a K&N.

She still feels really flat.. no real pick up at all and i cannot keep up with much lesser cars through the lower gears Sad

I am now going to swap the spark plugs as it almost feels as if she is miss firing slightly...

However, I just wondered what you guys could suggest.. Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like timing is out ?

But could be a number of other things ie lambda ?

Even an XSI is relatively quick. So id rule it out being an XSI engine.

Timing or coilpacks possibly.

remove belt cover, turn engine over till cams line up, fit pins, check to see if crank will pin up, more often than not wont due to the pulley slipping, but if the woodruff key is inline with the base of the block it wont be far off.

Take cam belt cover off and see if cams and crank pulley holes line up with timing holes in head and block ? Be carefull though as crank pulley could be shagged and won't line up as slipped round on its self ? Could also be the reason it's not timed correctly .

I always use a solid pulley for timing up that way it's spot on Thumbs up

8mm drill bit fits crank pulley timing hole and short 6mm drill bits fit nicely into crank pulleys Thumbs up

I'd get hold of a decent pulley first though and swap it so you know it's timed correctly ? Might as well do a cam belt change while your at it or get it done by someone who knows what they are doing Thumbs up

i have the receipts from the guy i bought it from and the cam belt was done less than a few k ago... maybe the garage was s**t and did it wrong?

I think i'll get some new plugs anyway.. What are we talking cost wise to replace the coilpacks?

How are you driving it?Dunno

They do need revving to make them feel quickWink not a lot of torque to pull you through gearsNo

Peak power is just over 6000rpm,so you need it up there through the gears to make it go wellYes

more than enough torque kev, more than the 30 bhp more powerful Civic type R, also more than all naturally aspirated incarnations of clio sport.

peak power is 6500rpm, IF the cam timing is correct.

How can you say more than enough torqueLOL

You need to rev them to make them go,no good sticking your foot down if the revs are too low/your in too high a gear cause they won't pull the skin off a rice puddingThumbs up

If Pablito is driving it like a diesel it will feel how he describes it belowYes

I tend not to rag the bollox off her.. but even when i do, and I'm changing up and around the 6k mark, she still seems slow off the mark.. and not terribly responsive to throttle change

I know I am spoiled really as my other car is 300ZX TT which is pushing 400bhp but my mate took the 6 out for a spin too and he said it felt flat to him. He drives a jordan civic.

Make sure you don't have a brake caliper sticking. They can be buggers for it. Front or rear.

As for the missing, compression test it. Then look into the plugs and coilpacks.

Ok.. Update:

The belts seem to line up fine. We did a compression test and all coilpacks were spot on.. no lost compression. We swapped the spark plugs since we were there anyway... She runs a little better but still feels sluggish.

My friend and i did a couple of timed 0-60s and they were all around the 7ish second mark which is in line with book times i believe... BUT she still feels sluggish and unresponsive down low.. for example in 2nd gear at 2-3k rpm and i floor the peddle.. she just doesn't pick up very quickly and not at all what i expected.. All my past hot hatches (and I have had a few over the years including golf GTis, Clio 16v, Saxo VTS etc) have always seemed "eager" and feisty when given the beans...

There is oil in the intake and in the throttle bodies. Upon checking the oil levels.. it is WAY overfilled!!

So.. an oil change is in order and let the rest burn off for a few weeks and maybe this will help as it is probably having to burn off all that oil either before or during burning the fuel.

I rechecked the last MOT and it does mention a small exhaust leak, but you cannot hear any blowing or anything..

I dunno.. it just feels slow Sad

too much oil could cause the pistons to have restriction on the downwards movement, you want it idealy just below the max line.

oil in the manifold is normal, oil breather deposits it.

fuel filter change, done?

pop your had over the exhaust tip with the engine running to find your leaks. youll probly need a new crush washer between you manifold and cat.

your icv valve will most probably be dirty, clean that up as its a very important bit of kit when going from idle to revs. the valve also forms an extra lip over time on the "intake" hole, less than a mm but some careful work with a file can remove this.

reset your ecu under full electrical load.

contemplate an injector clean but again this is a bit pricey.

check your tyre pressures?

lambda sensor possibly but they are pretty pricey.
