Hi guys,

I have recently had a new rear beam built and fitted with the following:

- rebuilt beam with new bearings, seals, shafts etc etc
- 30mm ARB
- 23.5mm torsion bars
- solid beam mounts

Everything seemed tight when it was fitted the other day, and there seems to be no knocks if you push up and down on boot hatch, or try to wiggle/move the beam from underneath etc.

Here is a video I took but its not as clear in the video as it is if you are in the car.



Any ideas would be greatly appreciated Smile

all nuts still tight from mounting axle to car?

    Should be. I dont know the torque settings etc, just did them up FT.

    It has been known for the 30mm ARB to cause this issue iirc, I'm sure it's caused by the machining in the trailing arm shafts having not quite been opened up enough to clear the ARB when it's under load....... Therefore I'd think about maybe removing the arb and putting ur hybrid or standard one back in and go for a drive, my guess is the problem will of disappeared.

    on my beam i did it up to TAF/nm and then after bout 50 miles i nipped them up again just to make sure it'd settled. how many miles since the beam was fitted now?

    Yeah I have heard that the bigger ARB causes some knocking, but I spoke to someone last night who has the same, and doesnt seem to be as bad as mine.

    I have only driven about 50 miles since having it fitted, and the knocking has been there from the word go.

    Knocking aside though, the car seems amazing, rear end is so much better than before, just worried about the knocking.

    where the end caps for the arb a good fit?

    recently had a couple of guys come to me with loose caps on the arbs, causing bar to shift with ease on splines.

    my recommendation is, that if anyone is to fit an uprated arb and it doesn't have 8mm thread in either end, get it done so you can bolt the caps on to the bar

    Not sure mate as I didnt build up the beam, I got Carl to do the hard bits, then I bolted other stuff on and to the car.

    Didnt the car get a test drive so all seems well before it was handed over to you, the knocking would have been noticed then surely.

    What about the beam mounting bushes ?

    Sound's to me like an ARB problem too.

    No it didnt. Basically I got stuck rebuilding the beam (couldnt get bars out etc). I sent it to Carl, he finished taking it apart, and then put together with new parts.

    I collected the beam in this state:



    I then fitted all the brackets, mounts, shocks etc, and fitted to the car.

    What do you mean about the beam mounting bushes? These are solid items converted by a member on here.

    Could it be the m8 bolts not being tight enough on the arb end plates to the trailing arms?
    I've had that issue with a standard arb, nipped them up and problem went.
    Just fitted a 30mm arb to mine and suspect I need to nip them up a bit tighter, no issues with my end caps being too loose, they needed a bfh to get them on! Laugh

    I highlighted this 2 years ago, and I can't believe they still sell them without holes in the end.

    video sounds more like the exhust heatshild rattling than a clonk from the beam

    Dont have most of the heatshields Laugh

    Will check that later too though as there is one left I think. The video doesnt do it justice really, sounds more clunky in real life (not on video)

    With my car the rubber bushes on one side of the ARB were worn, resulting in a knocking sound beacause the ARB is loose is the tube

    I had incorrect rubber fitted to hang my exhaust. Knocked like f**k. Changed them gor stronger thicker numbers and it went away. Although, I suspect your issue is indeed the arb knocking on the arm shaft.
