He's right, insurance shouldn't be that much of an issue, I've been running a 6 fully comp since 18, and had an EVO III at 21. None of this broke the bank.
M3 is easily achievable if you want it, just gotta find the right deal.
I'm 21, but I got my license in Germany. I had to swap it for a UK license, but when insurers ask I have to disclose that I haven't always been living in the UK (premium increase), I'm a student (premium increase), and only have 1 year's ncb despite having had my license for 3 years this month, as my first year and a bit was a named driver abroad which counts for nothing, second year was driving in the UK with no claims, and then I used my 1 year's ncb and being 21 to get insured on a '6 which was still really rather expensive.
Even if insurance would be reasonable (which it almost definitely wouldn't be given that admiral's quotes on normal 3 series tend to be higher than my '6s one), I don't have an extra £1000 to buy an M3.
I'll just wait until I leave university and have a job (I hope) and I'll be nearly 23 with more ncb hopefully, which should allow me to insure and afford something nice.

Pretty much, also my atypical insurance details usually lead to insurers disliking me.
Suffice to say, buying and insuring my 306 was at the absolute upper limit of my budget, and was probably the best car I could get for that money as well in terms of fun. I was wondering if a similarly-priced 3 series would be as interesting as a replacement, seeing as how decent 306s are a bit scarce, especially at the price I paid.
I've found a local crash repairs company that I'll be asking for a quote to fix my 306 though, and probably dicking about with it a bit more myself as well.
