Why do more people seem to be going for the supercharger over a turbocharger on the 306, whereas out of the factory manufacturers seem to go for turbo. Turbo's seem a lot cheaper to fit, just wondering why there are only a few turbo 306's?

When it's a retro-fit it's always down to what suits the engine best, whereas modern engines are designed from the outset to have a turbo. Some cars you'd only ever retro-fit turbos and never superchargers.

No-one fits superchargers new anymore, as it's spinning the whole time so is terrible for emissions. The majority of cars that have turbos new are to hit CO2 targets, not power targets.

Stan blames the EU.

because there are no off the shelf turbo conversions whereas we all know you can get a supercharger

package with everything you'll need, plus its been tried, tested and proven, and you can retain oe

ecu, exhaust manifold, clutch etc etc. Best ready to go turbo setup is a T16 but you won't find one and

even if you do it will cost more than a basic rotrex package plus it will no doubt need a rebuild, new

turbo etc.

This, I certainly do. Yes

I blame them for a lot more than just emission laws though. LOL

Don't DP engineering do an off the shelf turbo? I thought I saw a thread with someone using their kit on their car.

Yeah they do, it's almost all here http://atspeedracing.co.uk/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_5&products_id=23

Comes in at under £2k for basic setup before you start mounting intercoolers ect.

they do a basic manifold/turbo kit but not a full setup although they could probably tailor a package to suit

iirc, approx £2k for manifold, turbo and oil/water lines...then you need and ecu, fmic, etc

Yeah it does soon all add up. Just seen a thread on here about a turbo setup then wondered why it hadn't been done yet. Once I get my tax rebate I shall be getting Rich_W to build me a high boost engine Smile

turbo builds can be done on a budget, i'm getting there slowly with mine, up to now iv'e spent approx £2.5k and still need intercooler + hoses, ecu + mapping, clutch. so probably another £1500 then i'll need a limited slip diff

What sort of BHP you expecting to get out of that then? 4k is what a LBSC conversion comes in at isn't it?

It's a never ending slippery slope mate lol, and before you know it you have spent £15000 on a French tin can, when thinking back what else could I have bought with the money, an awful lot that's what.

But good on you guys for giving it a go, and when the thing worked it was brilliant.

well 300 is my ultimate target, however this is a front wheel drive road car so i want some sort of driveability so i'm guessing around 250 will do me. i know that doesnt sound like a lot but a turbo engine delivers its torque in a totally different manner to a s.charger

Rotrex is arguably the way to go but i just love the feel of a turbo as it spools at 3k rpm! plus the wastegate chatter lol

A damn fine slippery slope that I will be flying down, or I could do what my mate has done and spend 17k on a VXR that has lost 8k in three years anyway. Cars are money pits, anyone who thinks any other way is just lying to themselves. Might aswell make it a pit that I love LOL

I've always loved the sound of a turbo, I love driving my Vivaro since all the sound of the engine is the turbo whirring, that's a diesel van! Driving turbo petrols and I end up changing gear every three seconds to here the wastegate chattering. I'm a 25 year old child

i feel like the 306 is let down because if you have say a clio then you can fit a megane turbo lump, if your a VAG person then theres the 1.8 20v turbo, the list goes on

That's one of the disapointing things about the rotrex sc 6's, there is no sound from the chargerNo

You get abit of a whoosh from the exhaust from the forced induction, but I was hoping the chargers would sound like mini coopers etcThumbs down

i hate the noise of the supercharged coopers, horrible whiny things! although they do actually drive very well. a friend of mine had an s works with 220bhp, torque was always there, any gear any rpm but it was just, well, a miniLOL

Yeah they do pull well in all fairness to them. My mate took one in before that a woman said was too expensive to run as it was only 5 speed, she didn't realise someone had put a different gearknob on from a 5 speed and never tried 6th!

I'm going to buy a few of them exhaust things and clamp them on my mates cars. They won't know what is going on
