I've come around to stripping the underside of my 6 but there is around half a tank of petrol in there and I have just realised. It currently is on axle stands with no rear axle/front suspension so before anyone says it I can't drive it. I also have no front end so can't even start it at the moment. I had to say that because I know the answers I get on here Smile

What are my options for draining, I can't see a plug anywhere, so can I pull off a pipe (which one) from the fuel filter and just let it run? I assume (not sure if it's wise) that the one going into the rear of the filter is the supply so if I stick that into a suitable container I can just let it run? the pump. Will I do any damage if I run the pump until the tank is dry and the pump spins with no fuel?

Lift up the rear seats and unscrew the fuel pump from the tank. Then siphon it out is the easiest way. Yes

The rear seats have already gone so that shouldn't be hard! Is it worth flushing it while it is off, do tanks on new cars get full of s**t like tanks on older cars?

Another easy way is to take the rear drivers side wheel off and pull the elbow off the filler neck, loosen it on the tank and rotate. I did my HDi this way, but you need common sense and a willing receptacle.

I've got around half a tank in there so about 30 litres maybe, I haven't got a modestly priced receptacle that will hold that much. I also have the risk of setting me and everything around me ablaze to contend with

I tried siphoning petrol out once, ended up with a mouth full which was enough motivation to make me figure out a better way. Ended up robbing the washer fluid motor and pipe work and linking it to a battery to pump it out. Wasn't the quickest method, but it tasted better. Was getting petrol out before taking it to the scrap yard so robbing various parts was an option.
Incidentally, if you swallow petrol you should drink lots of milk!

The way he was talking about doing it was to crack the elbow on the tank so it would have to be a 30 litre tank that could slide under the car which is 12 inches off the floor! I've got a drum but then I will have to pump it, I've got a pressure testing kit from work which I can use to hand pump it out if it comes to it but it will take a while!

I need to make something that is easy and won't kill me and everyone in my street. Your not heading anywhere near Adam B's direction in the next few weeks by any chance Ash? I've got a set of PR1.2's to collect from him

I dropped a half full tank off my ZX without issue, dropped it with the filler neck complete still, it was barely off the ground too.

I can see that happening now, just get the jack underneath and off it comes.

Siphoning is the easiest way, or just buy a hand pump. They cost around £10 from most factors and will save you time and mess to get this job done. Yes

Well I don't want to use a bilge pump since I don't think they are rated for it (fumes from petrol & 110/230 power don't seem a good mix. The petrol is shot anyway it's been in the car for 18 months so is going to be used for bonfires and that is about it!

If you do head that way with selling some bits, let me know I'll sort you out some money for juice, save me the long haul I'm meant to be going on to get the wheels then a rebuild back axle from Mould.

I think that option may well be the best at the moment, it's in bits at the moment and getting it back on the road seems very far away...

    Banned for stan & woody

i drained my gti6 one using a siphon from Machine Mart, didn't cost much and worked well. failing that i'd just force the pump to empty it for you by sending power to it
