Is it possible to blow the head gasket and not lose compression on the cylinder? I've just tested mine today to see which cylinders it had gone on and there is no loss of compression on any of the cylinders, I'm thinking the leak may only be oil to water through the head. Has anyone had this happen to them before? Could there be another reason my radiator has mayo'd up?

Can happen for sureYes

Get the fumes in the header tank 'sniffed' for signs of combustion gassesWink

Could be your oil cooler, but most likely is gasket.

Then again it could be head cracked,or block cracked, looking on the bright side like........Whistle

I've got another engine to put into it, it's in the garage waiting to go in ATM, I was just wondering whether the old engine is worth anything, if it is just the gasket then I will probably rebuild it, I've not done a full engine rebuild before, only heads so thought I might aswell give it a go. It hasn't lost any power though. I assume that I should see a crack straight away when I pull the lump out or can they be hairline inside the engine, somewhere that I won't see it

Can be hard to find.

Are you losing coolant or oil?

Coolant, over a very long period of time though. Top it up once every 3 months or so, the oil hasn't changed colour at all either, it is just the radiator cap that has mayo'd

No, I started it the other day (hasn't been started for 18 months mind. Head gasket was why it went off anyway) turned over kicked in first time even on the old petrol and revved clean all the way. I am thinking of changing the radiator (that is gone, which is why I thought the head had gone) and just running it until the end of it's life. Spend a bit more time on the engine in my garage, getting it rebuilt and some shiny bits for it off RichW

Dont do that if it is gone you mite cause some serious damage. Get a sniff test done. You may just have a small leak in the cooling system

Would a small leak result in the radiator having discolouration on the filler cap? I know the rad has a hole so that is one that can be plugged. What I am worried about is that if I change the rad and then there is still the leak, then the new radiator will get gunked up with the oil from the head gasket going. Will this happen damage the new radiator or can this just be flushed out?

It can be flushed but is a pain to get it all out.

It's possible your oil heat exchanger could be weeping oil into your water system, this was the cause of my last rallye's demise as mine went big time and 2 weeks after fixing it the bottom end went.

Easy way to check this is take both the water pipes off, join them together temporarily so you can run the car for a bit and see if anything comes out of the metal pipes on the exchanger, if it does then there's your problem.

Well the new radiator I am fitting is a Nissen (hasn't arrived yet) but I'm sure they don't have the built in heat exchanger so I would say that I will have to go for a seperate oil cooler if I am going to run it on the track. I've spoke to people that say the oil doesn't get that warm but without this heat exchanger I thought it will?

How terminal is it going to be if there has been water getting into the oil this way, I can't hear any knocking or ticking from the engine so is it a case of fix this problem and I could be fine with the engine or is it just a waiting game until it does go?

Does the Nissens rad you are buying come with the take-off pipe on the side of the filling bottle for the heat exchanger or not?

Yes, if the rad is listed for your car then it should have the take-off. Nissen rads listed for the XSi don't.
