Hey guys, just out of curiousity as its flooding really badly outside my workplace right now, what would happen if i drove my low boost supercharged 6 through water that was too deep? Would it ruin the charger trying to compress and and kill the power thus saving the engine from damage, or would it go like a n/a car and ruin the engine only or would it f**k everything?

For the record i dont plan on risking it whilst its this deep, just wondering in case i, or anyone else, gets caught out by surprise in the night floods

If it is really deep ie up to the new air filter location it will suck in water and ruine your engine. Little tip water doesn't compress to well.

If it is safe move your car to high ground. Water damage will write it off.

I know water doesnt compress. I was just wondering if it would be any different to a standard car seeing as its got the charger, intercooler and all the boost pipework before it can reach the engine

If your intercooler setup is air leak free no water will get in unless the air filter is submerged in water and like Matt said and you will know the air filter is right up by the top of the engine bay so our car would have to be in water as deep as up to your window, which I'm sure you wouldn't drive through or be able to drive through so they should be fine I would imagine.

Yeah good point paul, and if the system did have leaks it would be down on boost pressure so we would know already. Surely anything higher than the bumper has potential to be sucked in? So would it f**k the charger? After all that is compressing air so surely introducing water would be bad for that too?

When I checked my induction, the air side entry was about an inch or so below the front splitter/valance! Terrifying!

I pulled all pipes and forced a hose behind my headlight

A SC-6 should be fine. As said above the filter is REALLY high up. It's people with K+Ns etc that are low down that are at risk.

Considering that the air filter level on an SC-6 is up at bonnet height, unless you tried to take the car underwater at the seaside, I can't see any kind of water ingestion at all. No

What about if the lower compression high boost Ones sucked it in?
Would the pocket in the pistons be big enough to avoid hydro locking?
Supposed it depends how much water

For all those thinking you will be safe with the filter mounted up high on the charger, just be warned.

On my old turbo diesel 306 I had the filter mounted up high (in front of the battery but high up just under the bonnet and shielded from the engine heat) but it still died due to water ingestion. Mainly caused by driving through flood water that was up to the sills, how ever the stupid prat driving his landrover through the deep part flat out caused a bow wave to wash over the front of my car.

The result was one conrod through the block, one intercooler full of water, one hybrid turbo full of water with f**ked bearings and one extremely f**ked off me, especially as the guy in the landrover f**ked off once he'd realised what he'd done!

Just remember that the Land Rover driver had to show a reason why he drives a 4x4 but for the other 364 days of the year it is probably an utterly pointless vehicle for him.

To be honest, I wouldn't drive through a flood that was up to the door sills in the first place as I would be too bothered about the rest of the running gear, let alone the engine. Wink
