My girlfriend's Vecrta was written off by the insurance a week ago, she's asked me to help find a replacement car but I haven't bought a 'sensible' car in my life. Whats a good shout in this price bracket? (5 seats is a min requirement, she has a large brood!)

406 hdi, saloon or estate. Plenty around at that budget.

I like Mondeos, problem is I've had an ST24 so lesser models will seem a bit s**te now LOL

She's not overly keen on estates, but the 406 saloon is in with a shout, so is the Focus estate as it doesn't look too bad Wink

I was going to say mondeo. You can get st 24's for under a grand no bother. I just sold mine 2 weeks ago with a years mot for 525. Or you can pick up a mk 3 for about a grand these days. Obviously the not a 220 or an st tdci. But the lesser models as you put it. I've had 5 mk2 mondeos there great cars

Hope she's ok mate?

Yeah I'd go down the vectra route again, from my experience they are fairly cheap and easy to fix. I've spent more time under my bros vectras than I have my 306s over the years and they don't seem too bad.

She's fine thanks, the car doesn't look to be that damaged to me, nothing a new bumper wouldn't fix but it was written off all the same.

Never been a Vauxhall fan myself but she likes them and it's her car after all. I'll keep my options open and see what turns up. So much choice in this price sector, it's tough to isolate one good car over another.

Type R is a fair way out of the price range unfortunately.

Does she do much mileage? Diesel's might be worth looking in to. Perhaps something VAG, A4 for example.

Insurance seems to take a bit of a hike on the VAG stuff, I'm torn on Diesel vs Petrol as Diesel prices are pretty horrendous now and unless the car has really good mpg I'm not sure it saves much. I'd like a 1.8T petrol Passat as they are so tuneable and I can mess with it but they are group 15.

Sounds like you get to decide on the car and she just has to live with it LOL

Group 15 isn't the end of the world surely? Must be talking a few hundred max for that. Unless shes 17 I suppose.
