So my main concerns are really:
1) What would be good choices for cars (£1000 - £1500)
2) How are newbies treated on track?

A mate of mine has just started doing track days with a Clio sport and I'm thinking about maybe getting a car myself. I've never been out on a track before and although I deem myself to be a very good road driver I'm a little apprehensive about how I would perform "out there" and how I would be treated by other more experienced drivers. So my main concerns are really: 1) What would be good choices for cars (£1000 - £1500) 2) How are newbies treated on track? edit: Just been reading Owains thread for dummies ________________________________________ Less than 24 hours to go! |

A Renault Sport Clio is a good choice for the money. If you can't best your mate, join him and get one too.________________________________________ |

I got a 205 gti 1.6 for £500. Needed a bit of work but was great fun! Slowest on track at brands but cornered well.I was a bit wary at first about being a beginner. But you get used to it after First gol. Just get out of their way and be aware. Instead of 'think bike', think cars potentially worth £££££ |

ian7675 wrote: What would be good choices for cars (£1000 - £1500) '6 (obviously), Saxos are good, 205, Clio, anything little and light. Power honestly isn't everything, something light is the way. I for one really find it so much more fun knowing you won't have to remortgage the house if you bin it, knowing you're not spending £800 a set on tyres, caning your brakes etc. I've been round tracks everything from s**tty little Saxos to £200k Porsches, and I'd take the Saxo any day. I know you're going slower, but you're sat in a noisy, rattling box of fun throwing it into the corners not giving a crap whether you make it out the other side or spin off into the gravel. 50mph feels like 150mph, unlike big M3s and Porsches where the opposite is true. Great, you're in a fast car. All that means is you get stuck behind everyone else more. You just cannot have that much fun in a car you can't afford to bin. ian7675 wrote: How are newbies treated on track? This is everyone's concern when they first start, and it really shouldn't be one. As long as you stick to the rules, so does everyone else. If you get out of the way when it's safe to do so, they'll wait for you to let them past. People are simply not allowed to overtake in corners, it doesn't matter how slowly you're going. It's your corner, and they have to control themselves. Only time I've ever gotten annoyed to the point of flicking someone the finger on track was on an MLR day where the novices just did not think - I was sat right behind them through the corners then on the straights they'd put their indicator on to let me past, but also put their foot down in a much faster car. Obviously I couldn't get past, but got stuck behind them at the next corner. That's the only time I've ever been flashy-lighty at people on track, most people behave. The thing to remember is that even if they've turned up in their Veyron, they've paid exactly the same as you have for the day, and you have as much right to pootle around at 50mph as they do at 200 - that's how the marshalls see it too, anyone bullying you will be black flagged and possibly sent home. Honestly do not worry about this. Track day organisers can have their ATDO licence revoked (and their insurance invalidated, thus leaving them liable for millions of pounds of damage) if they're seen to be allowing racing, timing or bullying, so they have no interest in allowing people to get abused on track. ian7675 wrote: edit: Just been reading Owains thread for dummies Glad to hear it's still useful ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

pugbowk wrote: Going to work on the handling before I go for power! This, this and this again. I did a day at Rockingham where I got stuck behind a guy in a Ferrari 599. He couldn't drive for s**t but refused to let some oik in a s**tty 306 past, so gunned it on the straights. Get to corners however and him, his lack of skill, and his big flabby Ferrari had to brake and squeal around all over the place, while I just caned through the same corner without even needing to use the stoppers. People always go on about "how important handling is", but people often put that down to them just not being able to afford a supercharger. Trust me, it's not. Speed is nothing if I can outbrake you by 50 yards, I'll be out the corner before you're half way round. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

roland rat wrote: anth wrote: These clios sound painful to own Ask dangti6 how good they really are Had mine for over 3 years now. The longest I have ever owned a car. FBW throttle makes it responsive and edgy. Brakes are 3mm smaller than the '6, yet feel much better due to the weight difference of the car. They just feel more raw and the steering feel is good. The VVT is a nice addition. I was tempted to use mine as a track car and fitted coilovers, lightweight wheels etc, but it's such an economical car that is great to drive that I continue to use it as a reliable runabout. I just for some reason keep coming back to Peugeots. ________________________________________ |

But theres no point me telling anyone on here as its the "blinkered drivers bum-boy" club |
