I need to get some bars welded into my car to attach the side mounts to for new seats.

Is there any specific stuff I should go for? I have seen round bars etc, but I assume box section is better/easier?

Any pics or advice to help me out would be great Cheers

I need some for my car too, CDS is what is advisable from what i've read, i think around 25mm dia, also, according to the blue book the plates at each end should have an area at least 40cm^2 and be 3mm thick.

I don't think i'll ever be entering mine into a race series so i'm tempted to just use some ERW 25mm tube with a 2mm wall as its infinitely cheaper than CDS. Laugh

There are kits you can buy on ebay and other places at around £40 a seat.

problem i found was the exhaust tunnel in the way for the driver. It really needs cutting out to get a seat low and in the middle. They ended up fixing one side directly to the top of the tunnel and the other on some bars. If you want to do it right you need to take off the exhaust tunnel cover piece. Large but it should come off if you attack all the spot welds.

mine were fine, took a while to get them right but the seat was perfect and i had no problems whatsoever. this was on a phase1, doubt there's a difference though

Cheers dickcheese, realised that after I posted it Doh (Admin, please move)

Cheers for the replies lads, but £30-£40 per seat seems a little steep. Will see what the local places can offer me.

I did his, centralised the seating position to his wheel and pedal setup - ends up quite a lot further over if you want to be sat dead square, made getting back in mine after feel like I was driving sideways for a while LOL

Want to make a kit up for me so I can get it welded in? Big grin

Not fussed about CDS as not a race car, just a weekend/track car. Let me know if you can, cheers Thumbs up

Don't skimp on seat mountings, they take a massive loading and in the event of a severe side impact or rollover are forced to cope with a huge ammount of G forces. If the seat tears out you face very serious injury.
Don't assume local garages and fab shops know what's required, give the work to someone with experience of motorsport preparation or look up the MSA specs and give the fabricator a clear idea of what you need.

CDS means seamless (Stronger) not T45 which is stronger still allowing you to use less (Lighter)

I have mine set low. I had to remove that pointless bit of metal thats spot welded to the floor under the seats to fit my bucket seats. Didnt have to cut any of the exhaust tunnel either

do it properly, sling them down low, you can always lift the seat with the side mounts Thumbs up

also position the harness plates properly, centre one directly under the seat, rear ones on the harness bar etc.

Chris, I used 40mm box section for mine. Loacted it over the little horizontal barrel where the original seat mount is on the sill, and welded the other end (with a plate) to the transmition tunnel.

Much like this http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=113226 but with box rather than tube.

I used 50mm box to bring up the height to level for the front

So why cant I do it this way? Surely that will be strong/decent enough? That was along the lines I was thinking of.

I think some people are keen to get the seat lower than than this option allows. Works for me though, but then, I stand at a mighty 5'7"...

Very good point. I may as well get it done properly if I am getting it done. Plus, as Mei said, if I make it low as possible, I can make the seat higher using the side mounts.
