Where do I start!

Well firstly I was certain I registered on this forum many moons ago but can’t remember my details, I have read topics on and off for years.
I never really contributed because I've never owned a 306 never mind a gti6.

So why am I here? Well, although there is a home for the humble ZX 16v, if any of you have ever ventured over, you will know it’s pretty much dead! There seems to be various sporadic threads over the internet on several forums but I hope my rebuild thread won’t cause to much upset here as we all know it’s essentially an s16 with some better trailing arms Whistle Big grin

This is my 4th 16v over a period of 11 years, and my fifth ZX. The first being a pre-cat 1.9 Volcane.

I gave my 3rd 16v to my brother (a poorly L plate green one) its here I think some of the members of that forum are here?

http://www.zx16v.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=562

Although I have tried to forget about the old flames I always seem to come across a thread somewhere with someone’s 16v, with a long string of replies from people about never knowing the car existed and why have you stuck halford/saxo 16v badges on it.

With there being so few left (I’ve just heard that my 1st one a k plate white ex-press car has been scrapped Sad ) I felt I had get my hands on another and bore people to death as an ambassador of this dying breed.

Well, here we go, my first silver one, advertised as spares or repair, with 11 months mot! It happened to be just round the corner.

Ironically I have known this car for over ten years, it has been in the area since at least 1998 and was always a nice example ran by a lady owner, over the last year the lady had given the car to her nephew who has what can only be described as ragged the poor car to death.

Plus points are its solid (no rust) and besides the bumpers and a lovely big scrape down the driver’s door the body is in good nick.

The interior is filthy and wrecked.

Anyway the head gasket has also gone; I’m quite pleased with that actually as if the engine kept strong there is no doubt this example would have been wrapped round a tree or just run into the ground.

Plans?

Well rather than just restore is to standard spec I’m hoping to do a little track work with this one. Two reasons for this mainly, the first means I can realise the true potential of the car and the second being that with it not being a road car I can justify keeping it alongside my four strong fleet (A3, 190E, Mk1 XR2 Janspeed Turbo, Fiesta RS Turbo).

I’m not going to go too crazy, plans are gti6 inlet, 8 branch mi outlet matched to custom downpipe and exhaust, overhaul of standard mechanicals, upgraded brakes, strip the interior and of course a thorough tidy up of the unique exterior.

I work away a lot so progress will be slow, but I will keep the updates thorough and pictorial to hopefully give a good read and some of you at the back of the class awake

Cheers

Ben

get a proper 4 branch manifold on it Smile the 8 branch 1.9 MI manifold wont fit and will be the wrong angle anyway.

I dont think the RFY inlet is worth removing in favour of the gti6 item, especially without a remap as it changes the behaviour of the air coming in quite a bit.

(or just fit a gti6 lump that has a 4 branch manifold and a nice inlet already fitted and more power.....)

probably much cheaper than faffing with the RFY lump Wink

hi welshpug

I already have the 8 branch, it does fit, ports line up top bolts line up, just need to make a brace out of ally for the bottom holes and transfer bolt pattern.

i know its at a slightly different angle but ive made them fit before.

Cant afford anything fancy and the gti6 one is a bodge if you fit it. the 8 branch will do nicely as a replacement for the standard cast.

with regards to the avac, I have read some of your threads over the years and agree whole hearted, its a good system, a great system when its working, i had the pleasure of having a fairly new 16v which was still being serviced by citroen, the kick on change over was amazing, almost vtec like.

But, you have to admit, they are now frail, they need constant tinkering, you might argue when they are set up they are fine, but for how long?

I have a gti6 manifold, I only want the car tractable for track, they work great in the higher revs and thats all I need, the bonus being I remove a whole lot of faff from under the bonnet.

I forgot to mention that I also had a phase 2 xsara vts.

The ECU shut down on me and it cost a lot to get it unlocked. It is tempting to fit this lump, whats the score with the wiring tho, do you need to unlock the ecu?

you'd need a phase 1 xsara loom and ecu, or any 306 gti6 loom and ecu, that's a multiplex phase 2 which is a biiig headache.

I doubt the 1.9 manifold is worth the hassle of making it fit over the cast 4-2 the RFY came with Unsure

My ZX should be back on the road very soon Big grin waiting for panels to be painted then re-assembly and a VIC!

Whats the deal with the rest of it? Just plans for the engine or for anything else? They do go well with the GTi6 engine in by the way - driven WP's pre-micra and it was like a grown up 205 GTi.

Welcome btw Thumbs up

nice, what cat did they write it off too?

I would have liked to get another white one but the silver is growing on me.

so not much work then for a gti6 rs lump? how does the plumbing differ?

adam, exterior wise I want it looking like new,I will be looking for a brembo brake upgrade, a freshen up of the mechanicals with some changes to the lump, that is unless i find out an rs lump upgrade is easier than i think it will be.

Cat C due to the value/repair thing, so a VIC req Sad

The 6 lump bolts and plumbs straight in Big grin

you just need all the cooling pipes and the rad (there's only top hose, bottom hose, heater hose assy, heat exchanger hose, a bit smpler than the RFY mess!)

also need downpipe/cat and main gearstick to subframe gear rod as it has a kink in it to miss the downpipe!

use the RFY front engine mount alternator and pas pump, a lot lighter bracket Smile I used the steel sump as the bracket overhangs it, but the alloy sump can be modified to clear.

The only mods were to mate the RFS engine loom to the single round plug in the engine bay fuse box, pretty easy job though as the Haynes wiring diagram is very good, and there's lots of info available for the gti6 loom.

technically less than half a dozen wires to make it run Big grin

basically get the front end of a 6 and swap it all over Big grin (minus the gearbox, though INC the brakes, unless the Brembos you meant were the clio RS ones on 310mm discs from Ash)

I wouldn't bother with just changing over to the 406 brembos and xantia discs. Didn't think they were that great and you could feel the weight over standard.

The Renaultsport 310mm kit from Ash is farking brilliant and so is the 330mm kit using the 406 Brembos. Loads of info on that on this site.

Yes they are ok, but there are loads better.

The renaultsport 310mm kit is a lot lighter and with CL RC6 pads it will pull your face off.

ahhh, you have already done this conversion, very tempted now, i still need an unlocked ecu to run it tho?
