Sorry for the late reply, i've been having fun inside my new climbing frame. I had to duct tape the windows in, just hope no robbers come to steal the contents tomorrow whilst i'm stuck at work. LOL

The cage looks epic cheers Phill, i'll get everything out at the weekend and get some more pics up of it. Cool

It was too dark to see anything last night, my light has been broken since i last used it so it kept flicking on and off so i decided to just tape the one window in, the other one had the hinge and what not already attached which made it quicker and easier to fit, still a ball ache though. LOL

Not had the pleasure of trying to do anything else to it yet, just plonked the bonnet in position to hopefully avoid it getting much unwanted attention from the gypo's that stalk the streets whilst normal people are at work.

I want quite a few extras, inc solid engine mounts. And why haven't you designed a new lightweight subframe yet? Sad

You learnt some new swear words yet Steve?

No time for a lightweight subframe, the original ain't too bad bar benefiting from some bracing, too busy making tubular rear suspension and top braces Big grin

By tubular rear suspension do you mean just the trailing arms will be tubular, or will it be wishbone and coilover style?

I've not needed to learn any more swear words, i'm quite comprehensive with them at work LOL
I've just been de-spattering the cage, wire wheeled all the areas which have been welded and given them a couple of layers of hydrate 80.

Tomorrow if the weather holds out i want to get the seat bars welded in, then i can start masking the windows etc ready for painting. I had to hoover the car out today, someone left spatter, dust and all sorts of mess in there...and they didnt even paint the cage for me.

Not yet, i'll have to keep an eye out, hopefully a nice 1/2" ratchet and full set of sockets will be in there somewhere amongst the wiring. Hyper

Is there any reason i shouldnt remove the cross member which goes from the sill to the exhaust tunnel in order to get my seat bars as low as possible?
I'd imagine that fitting the seat bars will help replace any structural strength the current setup has?

Yeah, the seat bars will sort that out, drill the fecker out, only spot welds. If I get my car running tommorow I'll nip over in the afternoon with yer paperwork + steal me ruler back/lend a hand for a bit.

Cheers.

I could also be interested in one of your beam setups, though i've got a set of 21mm TB's, 30mm ARB and a beam rebuild kit sat in my bedroom which i was going to fit at some point along with getting some neggy machined into the arms. Hmm
What sort of money would i be looking at for your beam setup and is there anything else i'd need?

If i've got as far as getting the welder out i'll be as kind as to let you have a try with it and see if its just me who'se s**te with it or if its the welder itself. I seem to be fine with proper industrial style ones but my dads is a cheap clarke one and i never seem to be able to get nice results, as im sure you may have noticed. Whistle Laugh

Bodyworks a bas**rd to start with when welding it to cage tube/plates. Specially the rusty bits!

I've got a little bit done to the car this weekend, I've hydrate 80'd all the welded areas on the cage to prevent corrosion, and done it on the triangulation to the front struts too.

Today i set about removing the crossmembers which normally live under the seats, for some reason the first one took me ages but i'd got into the swing of it for the second one and got it out in next to no time.

I then set about sorting out some seat bars, i wanted the seat to be central to the steering wheel and after some playing about decided that it needed to be closer to the centre tunnel than possible if i was to have the seat bars lower than the level of the exhaust tunnel. With that in mind i got the seat in a position that seems good for the pedals, marked it out and got the plates welded to the sills and tunnel.
Next i trimmed down some tube and welded that in, getting it as close to horizontal and the top of the tube to be flush with the top of the exhaust tunnel. My plan is to use the normal M8 nuts found in the tunnel for securing the standard seats and use them on that side's alloy mount, then i measured up and tacked on one of my home made mounting brackets to the bar, plonked the seat on to check it all lined up then gave it a test sit to ensure it felt good. It did.
Out came the seat and in went some finishing weld to the brackets.

I decided that i want the passenger seat to be in-line with the drivers seat so i've basically marked up where the plates needed to be, flap wheeled all the paint away in them areas then welded in the plates.

I also welded in the seatbelt mounting plates to the centre tunnel.

I ran out of time to get the bars cut and tacked in, the pub is calling me so whilst cleaning up the tools & mess i got the hydrate 80 back out and covered all the fresh welds. Earlier in the day i also noticed some little like nails stuck into the car at various places, i can tell you that kneeling on one of them is very unpleasant so i got walt and flap wheeled them all away, also giving the bare steel a layer of hydrate 80.

Enough typing, heres a few pictures:

Slow down a little bit, you're moving too fast is all Thumbs up

Yeah, I had a few swear words at those little pins/nails...ripped open two pairs of overalls on the feckers.
