Yes to insulating tape, but heat shrink makes a better job. Find an electrician who has the proper tool for crimping those lugs on. Squeezing them in a vice doesn't do a good job at all.

And yes those studs will do for an earth point if they are cleaned up well.

Get yourself some rubber boots from Car Builder Solutions, you don't stuff shorting out back there.

EDIT: Actually aren't those mounting points a really weird coarse thread where those weird plastic things attach the carpet? They might be, in which case you won't find a nut to match I wouldn't have thought. You can always make your own earthing point by just putting a bolt through, so not to worry.

Owain, saw your post after I had already done it, the boots look good but hoping I will be fine with the tape. I gave it a good few layers to make sure.

And then fitted..

Just need to put in an earth for the battery, and change the cabling in the engine bay (replace standard wires etc).

Then cut up battery box, remove big heavy battery, and fix the ECU holder somewhere.

Also started attacking my doors in preperation for fitting the polycarb windows.

Had to drill out all my pop rivets to remove my aluminium door cards, which was joyful Laugh

Then set about trying to remove wiring and seeing what I can get rid of. Removed the wing mirrors in the hope I can take the motors and wiring out, not much luck with that so far.

only thing with them isolators is that they do absolutely nothing when the car's running and you put it on its roof. i have 3 in my loft which i removed. they're fine for a 'right, parked up now, isolate car' etc but the car will carry on running anyway if you turn it off whilst it's running

that's why the FIA ones with the additional circuits are better

The FIA ones are far too safe for the DeathTrap Race Series 2013 that Chris is running in, they're simply not allowed.

Laugh my ass off

Sssh you!

I agree about the FIA ones, I may upgrade to this at a later date but dont see the need unless I go racing. Hopefully shouldnt end up on my roof on a trackday (fingers crossed)

Its better than nothing, I have seen a fair few cars with the battery relocated and no cut off switch.

It's okay, I'll skim read the important points. So far I have:

I have found a cheap sprint series to enter, its very new and not sure how it will turn out, but it is cheap

I have far too many jobs to get done, just lack of experience

yeah, dont need to have FIA in date stuff etc

its sprint racing, only one car out at a time and not "racing" so regs are much less restrictive

Its a very new thing, just been set up. Heard about it from a mate so thought would give it a try. Worth a punt

Worth a shot I guess, but my hopes arent high

The rules are shocking though, and most dont make sense

my car actually fits into the regs (which has been an issue with other series).

Also, the other series I looked at required a race license, fireproof overalls etc

Yes its really not the best designed series

hoping I will be fine with the tape

not much luck with that so far

I may upgrade to this at a later date but dont see the need unless I go racing

Hopefully shouldnt end up on my roof

Started the removal of my ABS today, then it started raining and I gave up Laugh

Not getting on very well though. Managed to remove most of the loom etc, but just have no idea about doing the pipework, I have been told to just cut it out in sections? I went about this and used sidecutters to cut a rear brake pipe. As you can imagine, this cut it but closed the pipe shut Laugh my ass off

My plan was to cut a pipe and put a bottle over it, then pump the brake pedal to drain the fluid? This hasnt really worked. Pedal was solid for a few pumps, now just goes straight to the floor Doh

Any advice on the best/easiest way? Owain? Rikky? Ste? Smile

Just cut out all the pipe by whatever means, you'll be running new pipes everywhere anyway.

Yeah I know but what did you do with the fluid? Or did you just let it leak everywhere? Thinking of attacking the pipes with an angle grinder instead Devil

Just let the fluid p**s out, most of it's in the reservoir and calipers anyway, very little left in the lines. Open the bleed valves on the calipers and pump the pedal if you're that fussed, should force air through the lines and get rid of most of it.

Ok, so made a start on the list of jobs I have for the car. Not much progress, but its a start at least Smile

Firstly (Lets get these priorities right) I went out for a decent little drive, then a half decent clean as can see the car sitting on the drive for the next few weeks at least.

The ol' gal still comes up pretty nice Cool

Then made a start on the jobs of battery relocation (cue eddy_gti6 to come along and tell me its about time, I bought the kit from him about a year ago) and ABS removal.

Battery removed and cut down battery box to leave me with just the ECU section (more on this later)

Dont think I need this anymore, but going to keep it anyway so thought would give it a quick spruce up.

Cleaned up and bit and de-rusted

And after a lick of paint, that'll do..

This is my cut down ECU box, just gave it a lick of paint, but still looks a bit s**tty from where I was less than accurate with the saw Laugh

And now onto ABS removal. This isnt going great as I dont really know what I'm doing but, how hard can it be?

Loom out (well, majority of. still need to remove ABS sensors from the hubs)

Then set about attacking the pump and pipework.

Pump out

Temp pipe relocation...

Removed pump bracket and pipework, lots of s**t buildup underneath

So after 30 seconds with the hoover and a damn cloth... tada Wizard

Then set about starting the battery relocation.

Firstly needed to strip away a few parts for access. As mine is supercharged, and a different configuration, this only took a minute or so Smile

I was told to run a new live cable from alternator to starter motor, and starter motor to fuse box (well, a link to them) This is how I've done it, so before I try and start the car, want to know if this is ok.

Alternator to starter

Starter to fusebox

Now this is the bit I'm concerned about. Probably going to buy some form of junction box to do this better, but for time being is it ok to just bolt the lives together, then cover in electrical tape.
